its a strain but they are doin it harder than theyve ever done it before

It's in the December issue, the big interview, he says he thought he might have had throat cancer around the time of recording ATYCLB or maybe before that, I haven't got it in front of me so don't quote me exactly. He'd been worried since his voice had been so wrecked on Pop. Obviously he didn't have anything wrong but must have been scary!

I don't know about a cold, but I do know that when they were doing the vocals for Last Night on Earth (or the chorus, at least), Bono's voice was totally shot for whatever reason so Edge had to back him up a lot.

Last Night On Earth was recorded at 7 am on the last day they had to record Pop. I read in an interview (I don't remember which one anymore) that the band really felt like it was the last night on earth, they were completely burnt out. I'm guessing that's why Bono's vocals are a little scrappy.
