The ninth place song needs a higher percentage of the overall vote than 11OTT's 42.55%. At the moment, the three songs tied for seventh to ninth (RTSS, OTH, Heartland) fall just short with 41.67%.

Hmm, that seems to be raising the bar even higher in favor of 11OTT. It's unbalanced enough in the first place to ask a 9th place song to compete with a 5th place song. But percentage just seems to throw any fairness out the window when you consider the wealth of beloved songs from this era.

I think total votes is a much more even comparison. Much more straightforward.

(Though if you're trying to compare 2 songs that weren't in the same poll, the only real fair way to do it would be to have a head-to-head tiebreaker.)

Honestly, cleazer, I think you're doing your maths all wrong. The reason we are going by percentage is to account for the fact that we may not have an equal amount of voters in each round (and if there is an equal amount of voters, the song with the total votes will win both on percentage as well as volume anyway). Percentage balances the amount of votes for an individual song with the total amount of voters. Compare a song with 21 votes out of 40 in round A to a song with 22 votes out of 50 in round B. Going by total vote, you would give the wildcard to the song from round B, since it received one more vote. However, it is actually less popular amongst the whole voting cohort: the song in round A received a vote from a majority of voters (52.5%), while the song in round B was not selected by a majority of voters (only 44%).

The fact that ninth place in the late eighties is a very realistic chance to defeat fifth place in the early eighties speaks volumes enough to the strength of this era. Fifth place in literally any other round in the entire competition is enough to guarantee you progress, so this is already a significant concession to the popularity of the late eighties. In any case, even if we went by a simple total vote system, 11OTT at this stage is still winning. RTSS and Heartland are tied for eighth and ninth with eighteen votes; 11OTT has twenty.

The Unforgettable Fire. Promenade. Bad. Streets. With or Without You. Running To Stand Stil. One Tree Hill. Heartland. Hawkmoon. So much love for all of them!
