What is a "bridge"?:reject:

A bridge is most commonly a tempo and/or chord change in a song. It can either go up or down in tempo and typically leads into a guitar solo. A really obvious bridge is in Beautiful Day...

See the world in green and blue, see China right in front of you.
See the canyons broken by cloud, see the tuna fleets cleaing the sea out.
See the bedoin fires at night, see the oil fields at first light.
See the bird with the leaf in its mouth, after the sun all the colors came out.

A typical pop song (and U2 writes many of these) follows this pattern:

Verse-Chorus
Verse-Chorus
Bridge
Solo
Verse-Chorus-Chorus.

Not all songs have bridges; "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," for instance, is basically all verses with a simple refrain. "Stay" is just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse.

Huh. I'd say stay has a bridge:

And, if you listen, I can't call.
And, if you jump, you just might fall.
And, if you shout, I'll only hear you.

Most simply, the bridge is basically any segment that connects two other segments. We can break out clinical defintions but this is rock and roll here, it is a loose vernacular.

That particular bit of Stay, I consider part of the chorus as it precedes the actual chorus, I call it a pre-chorus. Which is basically a section of a verse that is different from the rest of the verses and is used to build to the chorus. It is usually the same melody even if the lyrics change up a bit.

It is the build-up or a climb, and it is designed for a big payoff -the chorus.

Example:Original of the Species

"and you feel......" this is the pre-chorus
"everywhere you go...." this is the chorus
"(musical breakdown) then........do do do, sugar c'mon, show your soul...." this is the bridge

Best Intro: Streets
Best Verse: Sometimes (1st verse)
Best Chorus: Mysterious Ways
Best Bridge: Wild Horses
Best Outro: Walk On

Hmmm... let's make this into a super song:

<Insatiable Streets riff>

Tough, you think you've got the stuff,
You're telling me and everyone you're hard enough.
You don't have to put up a fight,
you don't have to always be right,
Let me take some of the punches for you tonight.

It's alright, it's alright, it's ALRIGHT, she moves in mysterious ways.
It's alright, it's alright, it's ALRIGHT, lift my days, light up my lights love.

Ahh...
The deep I spin
Ahh...
The hunter will sin for your ivory skin.
Took a dive in the dirty rain,
To a place where the wind calls your name,
Under the trees, the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heavens white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close

<Insatiable Walk On closing riff>

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind
Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind
Thank you... Cleveland, Ohio
We thank you... Cleveland, Ohio
On to the Almighty, we thank you
On to the Almighty, thank you
Hallelujah
Halleluj-uj-ah
Hallelujah
Halleluj-uj-ahHallelujah
Halleluj-uj-ahHallelujah
Halleluj-uj-ah
...That's enough

It's hard for me to pick "bests"
I have one "favorite" song, which I'm fiercly loyal to - I love it for a reason. But I should list more than one song so, here goes:

Best Intro: PRIDE, The Fly, Zoo Station, Streets, A sort of homecoming, SBS, NYD, Red Light, WoW/OY
Best Verse: PRIDE (They took your life...), wowoy, nyd "so we are told this is the golden age...", too many to write, Under My Skin, Night and Day
Best Chorus: PRIDE, Acrobat, Night and Day, Under my skin, The Joshua Tree, too many, Who's Gonna Ride..., Tryin' to throw...
Best Bridge:pRIDE, ....... I'll just leave it at that
Best Outro: PRIDE, Stuck in a Moment, One, Who's Gonna Ride, Streets, w/w/oYou.

ah.... I can't do lists like that. it would take too long to give an honest answer to what I thought was the best. So that's why there are so many

Intro: Zoo Station
Verse: The Three Sunrises
Chorus: The Fly
Bridge: A Sort of Homecoming
Outro: Heartland
