I am aware of the end being like Last Night On Earth (live) but we are talking album songs here I like the "intellectual tortoise" line because it sounds unusual and amusing. What are your thoughts on the lyrics of say "Playboy Mansion" ?
Sorry, everyone! Looks like "Jack" and I are sorta' jackin' the thread, here...
As for "The Playboy Mansion," I have to say that I LOVE THE SONG.
"I never bought a lotto ticket,/I never parked in anyone's space/The banks, they're like cathedrals--/I guess casinos took their place/Love, come on down/I'll wake up, she'll come around//Chance is a common religion where you're damned for plain hard luck/I never did see that movie, I never did read that book/But, love, come on down/I'll let my numbers come around//Don't know if I can hold on/Don't know if I'm that strong/Don't know if I can wait that long/'Til the colors come flashing/And the lights go on//Then will there be no time for sorrow?/Then will there be no time for shame?/And though I can't say why,/I know I've got to believe"
I absolutely love that stuff--I really do. I can still remember first getting
Pop and being VERY struck by this song. I love most of the lyrics in this song--the great play on Michael Jackson's meaningful career being over/his most recent album (history v.
HIStory), the commentary on OJ (Simpson) fiasco, the drug culture v. coroporate culture ("Coke is a mystery"), and one more song where Bono openly struggles with just what being a celebrity means. As far as calling the album
Pop goes, this is clearly the most important song on the motherfucker; Bono addresses the religion that so much of pop culture, U2 included, has become. A great use of the slide guitar, excellent vocal harmonics, a nice and understated-yet-propulsive job by the rhythm section make this a sonic gem, but the lyrics help to push the thematic content of the album to the forefront. I love the whole shebang, on this one.
