When I first heard it I like it, now I don't.

I'm not even sure why. It's just become one of those songs that I can't say WHY I don't like it, I just don't...

Apparently, you've lost your taste for porn. When you first watched porn you liked it, now you just don't.

" Catching your bright blue eyes in the freeze frame "

I really like this first line, it's meaningful for me :)

Off the top of my head, this song is probably my 4th or 5th favourite in Zooropa

I guess if you spend enough time around supermodels, you're bound to write a song about them. But, really, it's probably U2's most throwaway song ever.

Maybe that's why it was sandwiched between Zooropa and Numb...it's the ulitmate contrast to those songs, so maybe it's part of the theme/story of the record?

Maybe I'm overanalyzing :hyper:

I love the song cause it's so different

it's probably one of my top five favorites off Zooropa though :) ( :reject: )

It's sandwiched there because those early songs are U2 drinking from the cup of technology and succumbing to it's allure. By the end of the album, U2 are fully back in their usual place of soul-searching.

did bono say it was about porn or do you guys just think it's about porn?

i've always thought it was about a supermodel.

it's a crap song either way.

The lack of this thread starting with a post of "Where The Streets Have No Name" means this topic

You mean, THE BEEP? That soul-searching, family-waking, hidden track of goodness!!!

*I have a feeling that you're not talking about The Beep*

I don't know if it's directly about porn, but I think it's fair to say it's about enjoying the pleasures of a woman without actually having a woman around. Kind of the even better than the real thing idea being used again. Technology was defininately fueling their ideas, at the time.

Babyface might be the creation of Bono's 90's ubiquitous 'loner' character that was inspired by Westerns. Instead of the 'loner' cowboy receiving his pleasures at the local whorehouse, the '90's brought us the modern day equivalent of women brought to you in high definition quality. Either way, once it's over the Pale Rider rides on alone. This realization is complete by the end of the Zooropa album, but the character recurs on Passengers, Pop and concludes it's journey on ATYCLB.

yeah, i figured that.

still, i don't get the impression that it's porn.

Okay, I just realized I never made a post about the topic at hand here!

I just finished listening to Babyface. I don't understand why people complain about this song. I like it. It's fun to sing along to and even musically it's 'interesting'... hell, more interesting than half of The Bomb! And I don't think it's necessarily misplaced on the album either! Zooropa leading straight to Numb may have been too much weirdness to take in 1993, perhaps? :hmm:

I've always loved this song, and have often wondered - it came right after their journey into the irony of Zoo TV, and "embracing" the whole rock star/media cliche. So, along with the statements the song's narrator makes about erroneously believing that you know someone through the media images of them you're presented with, I wonder if Bono has felt that that's the way some fans perceive him. Must be kinda creepy, thinking of people viewing you, using freeze frame, and convincing themselves they know you more intimately than the usual fan-celebrity relationship. :yikes:

It sounds like its about porn. I guess it could be about a sexual fantasy involving someone who comes on late night tv, though. (Leno  )
