Your Top Ten R.E.M. songs list!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

Some great lists here, but also plenty of songs that I haven't yet heard and need to check out.

I gave up after marking out a couple of dozen songs which 'had' to make the cut. R.E.M.'s catalogue of awesome songs is so large that listing a top twenty seems like it would be as difficult as, say, listing a top five.

Country Feedback
New Test Leper
It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
These Days
Begin the Begin
Fall on Me
Leave
Try Not to Breathe
Green Grow the Rushes
Laughing

I've been staring at this thread for days, but I'm going to bite the bullet now.

1. Suspicion
2. What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
3. Monty Got A Raw Deal
4. It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
5. Man On The Moon
6. Lotus
7. Nightswimming
8. I Don't Sleep, I Dream
9. Finest Worksong
10. Radio Free Europe

I really wish the older albums would get a proper remastering job. Listening to songs like Begin The Begin on the remastered greatest hits package is a treasure, and the rest of the songs need that tender care as well.

What songs do you need to check out? :)

Quite a few by the looks of things, but particularly Country Feedback, Begin the Begin, Gardening at Night, Pilgrimage, These Days.. Much of the R.E.M. catalogue is on sale at a major chain here at the moment so I might do a blitz and fill in some blanks.

But for now, I might go with:

Losing My Religion
So. Central Rain
The Great Beyond
E-Bow The Letter
Let Me In
Walk Unafraid
What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
New Test Leper
Find The River
Sweetness Follows

Zihua, I have links for you, but can't email or PM you through the board. Can you post your email, or (if you don't want to post it here), email me at alicia(dot)k(at)comcast(dot)net? :)

I still highly encourage you stocking up on REM's back catalogue, but wanted to let you see what the fuss was about some of these songs.

Not a big fan but my fave songs of theirs are Orange Crush and Man on the Moon and the Editors cover of Munich

REM doesn't have a song called Munich.

Oh, an REM cover of an Editors song. "the Editors cover of Munich" makes it sound like the Editors are covering an REM song.

Sentence structure, man. It makes all the difference.

1. Feeling Gravity's Pull (Bono talks about lift off. This song achieves it)
2. Sitting Still (Stipe growls!)
3. Nightswimming (sounds like the moon)
4. Perfect Circle (played it at my wedding. No, really)
5. Letter Never Sent (can't make out a single word, but Mike Mills backing vocals are gorgeous)
6. So. Central Rain (Chorus is too repetitive, verse is irresistable)
7. Driver 8 ("all they hear is sky-blue bells ringing")
8. Flowers of Guatemala (never, ever get tired of this song. What is it? 25 years later?)
9. Camera (college: driving on a mountain road with a girl about 3 in the morning. This song takes me there every time).
10. Talk about the Passion (not everyone can carry the weight of the world)

:

Aye, but they did that too, Editors covered Orange Crush

1. 'Country Feedback'
2. 'E-Bow The Letter'
3. 'Find The River'

4. 'The Great Beyond'
5. 'Don't Go Back To Rockville'
6. 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It'
7. 'Imitation of Life'
8. 'So. Central Rain'
9. 'Electrolite'
10. 'Man On The Moon'

It took me some time but here's my new list of favorites in no particular order:

What's The Frequency, Kenneth
Man On The Moon
Finest Worksong
(Don't Go Back To) Rockville
At My Most Beautiful
The Great Beyond
Everybody Hurts
Electrolite
Bad Day
It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

And here's a playlist of "Best Of R.E.M." that I made and have been listening to a whole lot:

01. What's The Frequency, Kenneth
02. The Wake-Up Bomb
03. Supernatural Superserious
04. Man On The Moon
05. Daysleeper
06. Finest Worksong
07. (Don't Go Back To) Rockville
08. Begin The Begin
09. Losing My Religion
10. At My Most Beautiful
11. The Great Beyond
12. Imitation Of Life
13. Everybody Hurts
14. Electrolite
15. Bad Day
16. It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
17. The One I Love
18. Nightswimming

There's more missing like The Ascent of Man, Fall On Me, Orange Crushg, Tongue and so on but I wanted it to be 80 minutes long. I'm clearly more into the 90's stuff but I'm slowly discovering their 80's music. Amazing, amazing band and I'm still listening to their new album a whole lot!!
