40 really isn't that many songs :|

i tried, i gave up. (incidentally, i did make it to NIN's "gave up," and put it on my list before i actually did give up)

There is an astonishing amount of Keane in this particular thread.

in all honesty, i feel that way about most of your list, as i'm sure you would about mine if i made one.

I couldn't even begin to rank songs, as unlike albums they are so transient, so linked to one specific emotion. And despite the allowance of 2 per artist, I'm only giving 1. But here's a list of 40 tracks that come to mind:

Stevie Wonder, Sir Duke (if this song doesn't make you feel good, you're a lost cause)
Pavement, Fin
Bob Dylan, Jokerman
Joni Mitchell, California
The Pixies, Hey
The Jayhawks, Martin's Song
Peter Gabriel, Secret World
New Order, Temptation
Prince, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
Van Morrison, Steppin' Out Queen Part II
Velvet Underground, Oh Sweet Nuthin!
The Smiths, Ask
Steely Dan, My Old School
Frank Sinatra, You Make Me Feel So Young (live at The Sands)
Depeche Mode, Everything Counts (101 live version)
The Cure, The Kiss
Afghan Whigs, Faded
Rolling Stones, Moonlight Mile
The Beatles, Happiness is a Warm Gun
Liz Phair, Nashville
Sly & The Family Stone, You Can Make It If You Try
The Faces, Ooh La La
Bruce Springsteen, Tenth Avenue Freeze Out
The Band, The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down
R.E.M., Harborcoat
Sugar, The Act We Act
The Replacements, Can't Hardly Wait
Jane's Addiction, My Time
The Jesus and Mary Chain, Between Planets
Radiohead, Bulletproof [wish I was]
Bettie Serveert, Something So Wild
Shudder to Think, Resident Wine
Morrissey, Now My Heart Is Full
Pearl Jam, Corduroy
David Bowie, Young Americans
Jimmy Eat World, Goodbye Sky Harbor
Sinead O'Connor, Three Babies
U2, Bad (live)
Rancid, Coppers
The Who, We Won't Get Fooled Again

I liked this thread more when it was 30 songs and it was called Zoomerang's Music Challenge

Fair enough, you're right, I probably would think the same about your list but different strokes and all that.

The point of this is for people like myself who missed the original thread you had and to discuss about our favorite songs. Secondly, depending on when it was you posted, there may have been some time for people's song's to actually change with new music coming out.

That's the point of this. If you don't like it, then don't participate.:)

Zoomerang's thread was like 3 months ago or so

anyway, my list changes everyday

It's not my favourite song, and really the reason why I think is great is antithetical to how I feel about music, but I think Sonic Youth's 'Diamond Sea' is perfect in the sense that after listening to it I never want to hear anything else again. I don't know if that's a good thing.

So if I ranked the top 40 songs in the world, 'The Diamond Sea' would be at the top, I think...

This is impossible! My list gets way off at about #23 or 24, I can only do like a top 25 and then the rest are all pretty much the same. There are about 40 more songs I could have put in 25-40 that are just as good as the ones I listed.

Oops -- I forget Elton John's "The Bitch Is Back" which should slide in their around #30, and Bruce Springsteen's "Further On Up The Road" should be around #35, and "Electric Co." should be around #40. There are so many more!!!

*) Where did it all go wrong? – Oasis

That's an unusual choice. It probably is one of the most effective Oasis songs but because it's on the Standing On the Shoulder of Giants album it tends to get overlooked which is real shame.

 I love this song!
