In terms of originality, I'd put Hendrix way over Clapton. Even Clapton says Jimi's better... anyway, I can't do this in any order. And i'm not saying these guys are necessarily the best, just my favorite.

Will Sergeant
Reeves Gabrels
The Edge
Porl Thompson
Dave Navarro
Johnny Marr
Dean DeLeo
Joey Santiago
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Jonny Greenwood
Kevin Shields
Kim Thayil

In no particular order, the first tier:

David Gilmour
Mark Knopfler
Stevie Ray Vaughan
George Harrison
Chet Atkins
Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd (they have to be together, though)
Lindsey Buckingham
The Edge
Kurt Cobain (just kidding)
Bono (still kidding)

I mostly like slow, lyrical players and not so much riffers (e.g., Page) or shredders (e.g., Satch or Vai). There are a lot of awesome players like Pete Townshend and Brian May that'd probably go in the second tier for me for reasons difficult to explain.

An attempt at outlining some criteria:
  • Technique--Knopfler's finger-picked style gets big points here, for instance.
  • Tone--George Harrison and Brian May are examples of beautiful, distinct tones.
  • Expressiveness--Gilmour is a good example of someone who can convey a lot of emotion with not a lot of notes.
  • Skill--Guys like Stevie Ray Vaughan just plain have a lot of raw talent.
  • Taste--Simply knowing what to play. Someone like Noel Gallagher isn't the fastest or meanest player around, but he always plays something that suits the song well. Even if he stole it from another song.
  • Restraint--Don't play more than the tune demands. Don't bore me with overlong solos. Robbie Krieger is an example of someone who was always very succinct.
  • Diversity--Don't bore me with the same thing over and over again. Really good tone and technique can compensate for this, but people in rock music tend to get too bluesy at times (like Angus Young, for instance, who still rocks).

Kevin Shields
.........
Stone Roses Guitarist

Spot on regarding Kevin Shields, we need to do more to convert the world to his brilliance!

The Stone Roses Guitarist is called John Squire, unfortunately his solo stuff to date has not been up to the standard of his work with the Roses.
