UK man held as 'terrorist' after punk song

April 05 2006 at 02:35PM

London - British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said on Wednesday.

Detectives halted the London-bound flight at Durham Tees Valley Airport in northern England and Harraj Mann, 24, was taken off.

The taxi driver had become worried on the way to the airport because Mann had been singing along to The Clash's 1979 anthem "London Calling," which features the lyrics "Now war is declared - and battle come down" while other lines warn of a "meltdown expected".

Mann told British newspapers the taxi had been fitted with a music system which allowed him to plug in his MP3 player and he had been playing The Clash, Procol Harum, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to the driver.

"He didn't like Led Zeppelin or The Clash but I don't think there was any need to tell the police," Mann told the Daily Mirror.

A Durham police spokesperson said Mann had been released after questioning - but had missed his flight.

"The report was made with the best of intentions and we wouldn't want to discourage people from contacting us with genuine concerns," she said.

right. because some article saying it means it's true.

did i ever actually say london calling wasn't punk? i'm pretty sure i was talking about rock the casbah. correct me if i'm wrong, though. i might have said it. i was probably thinking how it's more of a rock-sounding album than punk in comparison to the first two albums, but i really think that was someone else's post.

that's where i said london calling is punk. i thought you were going to show me where i said it wasn't.

Ah, come on...you insinuated people here just like that song because Bono said it was great. Whatever. Anyway, my saying how "London Calling" is now officially punk was me just kidding around...not an attack on you.

i didn't insinuate, i pretty much flat out said that people here like it because it's punk rock that bono says is good. i still think this is the case with this site, and it's the case with plenty of other fans of bands. i took some nyquil, and it's kicking in, so i can't think of any other examples right now.

kidding or not (and yeah, i know you weren't totally serious), i don't like when people think i say things i didn't actually say. that's what pages 2 and 3 were about. :p

This IWasBored guy is just a Clash hater. He totally needs to stop hating on The Clash and being such a mean jerk.

I think my favorite punk song ever is 'Hanging By a Moment' by Lifehouse. That song is HARD.

seriously, a mofo sighting? wow!!

I wish I had seen this thread before. Too funny.

Seriously, how did anyone mention Rock the Casbah as punk? That is like calling D'Yer Ma'ker heavy metal. Just because some people say The Clash are punk and Led Zeppelin are metal does not mean that every song is. Besides calling The Clash a punk group or Led Zeppelin a metal group is such a disservice as they both moved so far beyond their early constraints.

Honesty, my favorite punk song probably would be something off of The Clash's first two albums but I can't really decide what. And no, I don't like The Clash because of anything Bono said. I never knew he said anything and, besides, 90% of everything Bono says is shit anyway.

Seriously, can I count Police & Thieves as a punk song? Punk in attitude, reggae in execution. IWB - I need your punk expertise.
