Eggert Magnusson's idea that the US could host a Premier League game or two is a good one.

I mean, yeah sure, the US approach to sports and the UK one is pretty different, but there's loads of interest now (although probably not comparable to baseball and American football). Of course, clubs will moan about fixture congestion and UK-based fans may see this as selling out but, in response to the latter charge, I've met loads of non-UK people who are rabid fans of many Premiership teams and whose biggest dreams are to watch their team live at Old Trafford/Anfield/wherever.

So I mean I think it'd be great, there are loads of logistical things to iron out but I think it's a nice idea. Maybe even bring in teams with a good American contingent - Fulham for example - if the Uniteds and Liverpools pass this up?

I truly hope this never ever happens. I do have sympathy for fans abroad who don't have the opportunity to see their team play but you can't ignore the importance of 'home' advantage. If we're talking about a pre-season tournament between a select number of Premiership clubs on US soil then I think that would be fantastic. However, the league itself should never step outside England imo.

Zoom, did you watch the game? I felt that Gerrard was playing his heart out, but it seemed like he was TOO emotional. That is not an argument I make very often in football (except with Rooney), but I thought that Stevie was pushing too hard.

But if we use that argument then Kuyt should have been pulled off before Gerrard after that horror tackle on Neville.

I agree with Zoomerang with regards to Rafa's unusual selections. Why you would ever keep a striker like Torres on the bench when he was clearly hitting his stride so early in the season is beyond me. His rotation policy is doing more damage than good this season, imo.

Rafa clearly doesn't care about the league as much as he should. i remember when he put torres on the bench for the portsmouth game too and they were lucky to get a draw there. he was just saving torres for the champions league.

Which is EXACTLY what I said.

yes, but when you consider how ridiculous rafa has been with his subs this season it just adds more fuel to the fire.

and like i said dalton, don't think i was having a go with you. not at all.

No worries, Zoom. I didn't think you were. I agree with you about Rafa's subbing. I also agree about his rotations. I can never figure out the rhyme or reason for them.

I think Sir Bobby sums it up well.

There can be only one boss at Liverpool —
21:58pm 27th October 2007

It may seem strange to say it but having superstar players can bring its own problems. Because of their talent and drive, people sometimes tend to focus on them to the exclusion of the rest of the team. It's a point that I'm sure will be made today when Liverpool meet Arsenal.

Whereas Arsene Wenger has shown there is life after Thierry Henry, Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is under more pressure than at any time since his first season. And that pressure is intensified every time he makes a decision about his very famous captain, Steven Gerrard.

My view is that Gerrard is a great player; one of my favourites, in fact. But no individual is bigger than the club and this is the time for Stevie to ask 'What can I do for Liverpool?', not 'What can they do for me?'.

That means accepting any role in the team that Benitez feels is right. And showing positive body language whether he plays 90 minutes or not. We've seen how big players can detract from what a manager is trying to do.

Dimitar Berbatov undermined Martin Jol at Spurs with his behaviour at Newcastle on Monday, Henry's apparent disenchantment was highlighted by Arsenal-watchers last season and Gerrard has always made his opinions clear about where he wants to play.

Last Saturday, Benitez took him off and the move worked because Liverpool beat Everton. And yet the manager was still criticised because he had dared to take off the talisman.

Steven Gerrard

I know how he feels. I once left Alan Shearer out of a UEFA Cup match. We went through comfortably, so it was the right decision because Shearer had rest before our next game.

But Alan's exclusion became the story, rather than us winning the tie. It can be frustrating for a manager because the ethic should always be: 'The team comes first'. And in that respect, there was no one better than Shearer.

Gerrard is probably regarded with Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool's greatest ever player and while he has earned that respect because of his fabulous displays, it comes with a responsibility. Players like Henry, Shearer and Gerrard nearly always have strong personalities. It's probably what made them great in the first place.

Superstars have control over certain things; they use their voice to make suggestions about the team and others will look to them in the dressing room.

In the worst-case scenario, they can overstep the mark and start thinking they are the boss — when they are a long way from it. When they become managers, they will realise the problems that come with a powerful player.

I am not saying Gerrard is deliberately undermining Benitez, but his apparent willingness to give an opinion is not exactly helping. Stevie should be aware of the influence he has, and now is the time to use that influence to back the manager in a trying time.

The best managers realise quickly when there is possible conflict with a big-name player and they act decisively to make sure everyone knows who is in charge.

Sir Alex Ferguson has done it often, most notably with David Beckham and Roy Keane, while Wenger dealt with the Henry situation for the good of the club.

Henry was a sensational player for Arsenal and enhanced the Premier League. But Wenger was not afraid of him. I don't know if Arsene thought Henry saw himself as the most important person at Arsenal but the fact is, he was prepared to sell him.

On the evidence so far, with Henry removed, Arsenal look a better collective unit.I am not sure if that's relief because Henry dominated situations, but it has worked.

I hope Liverpool fans realise that and back Rafa when he deals with Gerrard. I am sure the Liverpool captain is a long way from leaving Anfield, but it is important the manager is in charge and is backed by the board and the fans.

Rafa was brave in taking Gerrard off at Everton because he would have been severely criticised had Liverpool not won.

But they did win, and I am not sure why Gerrard had to go and see his manager to ask why he had been subbed. Would Dirk Kuyt, Javier Mascherano or any other player do that?

Gerrard has got his wish to play in the middle this season. He was quite outspoken about that last season, although Benitez was quick to point out that the decision was made because Liverpool lacked flank players — not because he didn't think Gerrard was good enough in the middle.

I think Rafa appreciates what Stevie has done for the club and the talents he brings to the team. But he is not bigger than the club — and, if they want to emulate Manchester United and Arsenal, and win the Premier League, all Liverpool fans should remember that.

Great match last night, awful referee though.

I don't know what Alex Ferguson is complaining about though. Arsenal were playing the better football (Ronaldo's goal was the best though) and United were kicking them off the park, and the ref was bottling all his decisions. Every innocuous challenge seemed to go United's way, save the last non-foul by Saha that led to the second equalizer.

Great game though. And Cesc Fabregas, damn. Folks, he's 20 and playing like he's 29.

I don't get everyone blaming squad rotation for Liverpool's failings. It's not like Man United are playing with the same thing week in week out (Ferguson likes shuffling Nani and Carrick and whoever due to injuries and whatnot) and they're getting pretty good results aren't they?

And the daftest thing I've heard all week is that Alex Ferguson is supporting the FIFA quota plan - five foreigners in any starting XI. Genius, since he had five Englishmen in his sixteen at the Emirates (Brown, Ferdinand, Hargreaves, Rooney and Carrick) and three against Kiev (Simpson, Rooney and Eagles - who didn't get on the pitch).

FUCKING GET IN!

birmingham 1 - 2 aston villa.

can't beat scoring the winner past your local rivals in the 87th minute. words can't describe the emotions.

Gabby agbonlahor is a real rising star.

I'VE GOT TICKETS FOR FRIDAY'S ENGLAND FRIENDLY.

if only it wasn't under such miserable circumstances.

i don't care... this is a dream come true for me, and i'm gonna enjoy myself anyway.

just make sure you don't boo any of our players.

booing your own team is not cool

some england 'fans' should be ashamed of themselves

i've lost my voice, and haven't been able to speak in nearly a week. i'd be so lucky to be physically able to boo them.

but of course, i wouldn't. i agree, it's pathetic when people boo their players... unless of course it makes sense.

but at the start of a match or early on? ridiculous.

any idea what the starting 11 will look like?

i'm assuming it'll be something like this:

owen - crouch

cole gerrard barry beckham

bridge/a. cole (is he fit yet?) campbell richards lescott

??

that's a pretty... unstable backend if you're asking me. i wouldn't want to go against croatia with that. definitely could use terry back there... and rooney too for that matter up front.

is it even a massive screw up if russia doesn't collect all three points on saturday?

haven't israel avoided defeat all but once in like their last 18 home matches?

it might not all be over quite yet.

Benayoun being out for Israel is a massive blow for them and us.

i think russia will win but i'm not 100% sure, israel can be a difficult place to go to.

as much as i will hate england not being there in the euro's next year if the worst comes to worst, it could be the best thing in the long run if we employ a good manager with a good record.

Personally, I think Israel will get a point off Russia on Sat. night, but I still don't think ingerland will qualify, everyone seems to think if Russia drop points against Israel its a forgone conclusion ingerland will qualify, but if you ask me, this has got so much in common with Poland, in '73, & I can honestly see Croatia getting at least a point next week, which will see ingerland out, & to be absolutely honest thats no more than they deserve, no disrespect to any of the nations in that group, but I really don't think any of the Major footballing nations would have had too much trouble qualifying from such a group, the sad fact has to be faced, were just not that good. Mclown is certainly way out of his depth, but the players have to take a huge share of responsibility for this, & I personally think Jesus Christ himself would have trouble making something of the shambles that is england!

what's with that quote from the israel side saying they "hope russia qualifies"??

i trust you've all read that by now.

who says that?

crazy.

last time the netherlands didn't qualify for a major tournament it didn't upset me in the slightest
cause if we would have played then as we did during the qualifies we would have gotten destroyed cause we were so poor at the time

One thing i will say is that mclaren has been unlucky with injuries however it's still no excuse for some of the team selections he's made. anyone remember the left hand side of frank lampard and phil neville?

rumour has it tomorrow that he's going to revert to the brilliant midfield pairing of stevie and frank with good old becks on the right. the combo that did so well for us at the world cup. that's the same becks that hasn't kicked a ball for a couple of months, is nearly 33 and now plays in a complete mickey mouse league.

the sooner steve mclaren is out the better. if we do qualify for the euro's it certainly won't be on merit.

so becks got terrible in the span of a couple of months? since august, anyway?

is that what i'm hearing?

wow the english are a finicky lot.

he was unreal this year before his injuries forced him to the sidelines.

he was excellent for real madrid for the last couple of months of the season but after seeing years of mediocre england performances with him being the mainstay of the team i think we need a new direction. we need fast and tricky wingers like david bentley, ashley young, aaron lennon and shaun wright phillips. these players are the future. the longer becks plays at that standard of football, the more detrimental it will be to his game when he rejoins with the england squad who've been playing top class premiership football week in week out.

i still think he's a very good footballer but i don't think what he offers will take this team any further.

if i ever hear another word about aaron lennon and SWP being the "next generation" of this club, i'm going to go absolutely mental.

tell me... what exactly has aaron lennon done? especially post world cup? he
s always injured and SWP while like lennon has pace, is limited otherwise.

beckham right now is better than either of those whether his fitness is 80 per cent or not.

lennon is a classic example of people praising him for his "potential" rather than his current form. how much longer is that gonna last exactly?

this is all a mute point anyway for austria and croatia as lennon and swp are both injured anyway (although swp has now joined the club in vienna).

Beckham would do fine for England if they could tether him to within 30 feet of the right sideline and play him with a rb that overlaps well.

Becks only real value at this point is his long range passing. If the team attacks primarily through the center and left flanks and then reverses field quickly, he could be very deadly in sending crosses into the box.
