Basketball is a global sport and also very popular. The number of diferent nationalities in the NBA this days prove it.

Maybe with time it can get more popular.

In Mexico there are thousands of basketball courts, even if made in public parks, funny is that in some cities most of this places built for basketball are used to play a form of Football called futsal.

Shock result from group D USA 3 - 2 Portugal.
Portugal played really horribly, and nowhere near their potential. US played ok, and were smart enough to know Portugal's weaknesses and exploit them.
Portugal's defence didnt turn up for the game, and the keeper was disastrous, couldnt hold onto a ball, and when he did get something on it, never got it out of the danger zone.
In midfield and up front Portugal never really gelled, it seemed like the team had never played with each other before, and they missed a sackful of chances when they did manage to create.
A very disappointing display for Portugal, who are a side I like and usually enjoy watching and a coup for the US, who probably couldnt believe their luck.
Hopefully Portugal can put on some more impressive displays in the last 2 group games.

Didn't the Aztecs used to play a game similar to basketball?

well I read thru that and just feel it's a matter of personal choice. All sports have their good and bad points, eye of the beholder stuff.
I do want to comment on the Q .....why isn't basketball as popular? All you need is a ball and somewhere to hang a ring.
THE SURFACE.... my eldest son was very into basketball for a while, but living out of town he didn't really have anywhere to practice. We hung a hoop on a tree that bit was easy. But you just don't get bounce from an earth surface(well not here anyway,it's sandy) I checked out the cost of cementing or asphalting a small area for him...ouch very pricey!! And then he broke his arm in rather spectacular fashion doing a slam dunk at school......now he plays soccer
It's best if a soccer pitch is well cared for, but a game can go ahead "in the rough".
I can't believe I watched old QE2's birthday bash instead of the Ireland v Germany game.

PS: serious typos , slowly slowly love

that is most definetely a valid question. the only thing that comes to mind is that the money to sign all the little kids just wasn't there after they had locked up the mid schoolers to 10 year hundred million dollar contracts.

Yeah, good showing for Croatia! Italy's going to be furious over that last 'goal' though...imagine if it've been allowed!

China right now is conceding goals every fifteen minutes.

As for the b-ball question, I guess in some areas kids can't even afford balls. Pele got his start kicking tin cans around.

BRASIL 4 goals, each one by one of the "R"...Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo!

Yup, we won against China. Not the match of my dreams, but they played better than the first one against Turkey. Im almost happy now
