wink Wilco @ the Taft Theatre 2-11-2005

http://eachnotesecure.modblog.com/?s...blog_id=462478

My review of the show.....rough at best. (the review, not the show)

What is it about Jeff Tweedy? I mean, the guy is a frazzled looking, unassuming, average bloke. But his voice tends to jump off the page and ingrain itself deep within you. Wilco was in town Friday, hauling along thier now 6 piece band. And while members have changed in recent years, the strong convincing sound has not, nor has Tweedys quick wit and warmness to his followers.

One thing that struck me during the set was how much I tend to underappreciate the guitar skills of Mr. Tweedy and his mates when I think of Wilco. The solos througout thier latest release, "A Ghost is Born" seem to really highlight this. The guys almost take on a bit of a jam band vibe for parts of thier current set, going on as the excitement and head bobbing from thier audience grows.

And there is something a musician who speaks between songs, not too much, but not so little that he barely acknowledges the fans glued to his every move. Jeff seems to have a grasp on this. Fans are always yelling stuff and Jeff is one of the few I know of that hears it and at times responds. On this night it was a rabid male yelling for Wilco to "turn up the guitars!, we wanna hear more on the solos!!!"

To which Tweedy replied, "I think it sounds pretty fucking good man", much to the delight of the rest of the crowd. He then went in to quite a humorous dialouge with the fan, although he couldnt see him, ending with his speculation that the fan could be sporting a fanny pack. And later a humorous apology.

Although I longed for more older Wilco, more Being There, AM and any Uncle Tupelo, it was still an amazing show. The new tracks from Ghost play as well live as and Wilco jams of old, and it was nice of them to mix in a few tracks from the Woody Guthrie inspired Mermaid Avenue sessions. Througout though, Jeff tends to get the most out of his audience, whether its inviting help on Kingpin, or just recognizing the crowds lyrical knowledge and allowing them to shout a chorus. The set ended after two hours, to the dismay of the faithful in attendance, but I was left with a crack Mr. Tweedy had spouted towards the end of the evening.

He joked that we had a relationship now, the disfunctional type between band and audience. We laughed, some were ridiculed (see obnoxious fan mentioned above), songs made us shiver and shake, laugh (Jeff forgot some words to Via Chicago), and of course, feel for the music and this band.

Jeff knows what hes doing though, and hed be lying if he said it wasnt easy.....

Thanks, Elvis. You got Outtasite (Outta Mind)! The show I saw opened with Misunderstood and went right into Far, Far Away, which was very cool so we did get a couple goodies from Being There. Isn't Nels Cline amazing? I love the whole new band so much. Just a joy not only to listen to but to watch as well.

Rumor has it they're coming back my way this spring. I can't wait to see them again.

Glad you enjoyed the show. Thanks for the torrent, too, but I don't know how to download them.

Thanks guys, for some bittorent tips, go here
http://www.techspot.com/download14.html

I recommend downloading using this, then converting using a FLAC frontend, as that is the format these are in, converting to wav should be easy.....
I will be posting a track or two on my mp3 blog later this week as well.

I'll be on the floor with a beer in my hand, trying to get as close to the band as possible

Awesome review EP--the last time I saw them was in St. Louis (last September) with their hometown crowd. We were lucky to get some selections from A.M. (he dedicated Casino Queen to his father and his dad's best friend). The songs from Ghost sounded amazing...Spiders and At Least That's What You Said almost knocked me on my ass (in a good way, of course).

Last night's show was amazing--well over two hours as well. Aside from the assholes in the audience (who always seem to ruin a show), it was flawless. More details are in my blog

Great setlist! You got Reservations! I enjoyed reading about the show on your blog. Spiders and At Least That's What You Said were the highlights of the show I saw as well. Just totally rocked.

We had an obnoxious girl at the Denver show last fall, too. She kept screaming "Casino Queen!" every five minutes until finally Jeff looked at her and said something like, "If Casino Queen is the only thing you want to hear from A.M., you're going to leave disappointed tonight. We played that song every show for like eight years--seriously, EVERY SHOW for EIGHT YEARS!-- and now we play it....mmm....when we feel like it. And we don't feel like it tonight, okay?" So she finally shut up. But overall our audience was good although on the message boards they said people further back were really obnoxious (I was second row).

So the New Mexico show, where I live, has been on the schedule for about a month now and still no news about ticket sales. It's driving me a little nuts.

I wanted to turn to that asshole and brag about how they did Casino Queen the last time I saw them in St. Louis. Jeff dedicated it to his dad and his dad's best friend, because they both have spent numerous hours there gambling. It fucking rocked the house.

P.S. my friend took me on the casino queen a few years back...i've never seen more old ladies smoking cigarettes in my entire life--too funny.

I finally succeeded in listening to the Taft show, EP. It is awesome. It was all quite a technological stretch for me but somehow I accidentally did it. Only got the first couple of minutes of I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, though. Not sure what happened. But it's a great show. The sound quality is fantastic. Then I tried to open a torrent of the Denver show I saw which I'd downloaded from another site a couple of months ago but was never able to open and I still can't get that one to work. I'm slow but learning.
