Just bands, as opposed to solo artists/orchestras? That narrows it down a lot for me.

Husker Du
Big Black
Kitchens of Distinction
Pixies
U2
Slowdive
Beach Boys
Ride
My Bloody Valentine
Joy Division

No real order, other than Husker Du being number one.

Enjoying the Catherine Wheel respect going on in the thread.

I don't think we'd have enough fans to start a whole thread, but curious to see your rankings, LM:

1. Countdown to Ecstasy
2. Aja
3. Katy Lied
4. The Royal Scam
5. Pretzel Logic
6. Everything Must Go
6. Can't Buy a Thrill
8. Two Against Nature
9. Gaucho

Gaucho has a few of my favorite SD songs (Hey 19, Babylon Sisters, Third World Man), but it's too short, I DESPISE Glamour Profession, and after Aja it's just too anticlimactic.

Hmm...let's see...

1. Aja
2. The Nightfly
3. Katy Lied
4. Royal Scam
5. Gaucho
6. Morph The Cat
7. Two Against Nature
8. Pretzel Logic
9. Countdown To Ecstacy
10. Can't Buy A Thrill
11. Kamakiriad
12. Everything Must Go
13. 11 Tracks of Whack

I haven't heard some of these in a while, but I remember hearing Katy Lied last spring and being blown away once more. SD are so great. My dad is a big fan and his favorite is Royal Scam.

I don't know if there's a better-produced album. Ever. Considering the year it came out, it should sound way more dated than it actually does.
I actually haven't heard it.

I might though, because of your recommendation.

Do it. It's better than In Rainbows, believe it or not.

It's definitely not for everyone, but if you can appreciate the jazz/rock fusion and the lyrics, you might like it.

But hey, if it's good enough for MF Doom & De La Soul to sample, you should appreciate it.

And that drum work on Aja...immortal.

These are my favourites now as opposed to my historical faves. If I haven't listened to a band in a couple (or more) years it's not on here even if it is a huge part of my musical history. Hence U2, REM, et al aren't listed.

Only the first one is set, the rest are pretty fluid. I realised how many solo artists I listen to now when I was trying to come up with favourite bands. A couple of these are duos rather than full bands, but in these cases the two musicians played just about all the instruments with only relatively few extra musicians.

1. The Church (also love Steve Kilbey's solo work)
2. Catherine Wheel (and I quite like Rob's solo cd. And he is one of the most accessible -- and nicest -- musicians I have ever seen. (and very funny to boot ) )
3. Gersey
4. Wilco
5. Jack Frost
6. Porcupine Tree
7. Art of Fighting
8. Noctorum
9. The Go-Betweens (mostly Grant McLennan's songs, although some of Robert Forster's are growing on me. I love Grant's solo work also)
10. Remy Zero

Oh definitely.

I'm sure you're incredibly familiar with the Aja classic albums special, but I must say that I recommend it to everyone. Great footage all around. You can find it on youtube, actually.

My favorite part is when they play all the rejected solos for Peg. It's insane that they spend so much time on a part that essentially amounts to, what, like 10-15 seconds?

Also, Purdie demonstrating the "Purdie Shuffle". That guy's just a genius.

Shouldn't forget Rick Marotta thought, he's a great drummer too.

And Chuck Rainey secretly playing the slap bass part he was told not to.

Yeah, I remember that. I really liked the guitar tone they had going there. The finished solo was definitely the best, but the others were quite interesting.
