Which instrument should I learn to play next fall?

Now that I've abandoned the more intellectual pursuits involved in a Master's degree, and since The Man will be gone for extended periods of time in pursuit of his Master's degree, I'll have the time I've always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument. The problem is, I'm tone-deaf and can't even whistle in tune.

I've always loved the cello, and have wanted to learn to play it for ages, but I also love electric guitar! (Especially when I'm listening to live U2!)

So, have you an opinion? Experience with cello, guitar, or both?

Talk to me, baby.

Guitar! Although the cello would be cool too. My roomie plays the cello. But, no, go with the guitar!

I would go for the guitar. I play piano, and I always wanted to learn to play guitar. Go for it Martha!

well of those two choices, I'd suggest guitar.
I have a feeling a cello would be very expensive( I know just the bow for my friend's viola was a LOT of money **cass faints**)
Maybe you can borrow/hire/ a cello, to see how it feels to you.

am I allowed to say it here?...what a cello feels like?

You'll want the cello for sure...

sorry)

There must be some great solos written for cello, that would give you a lot of enjoyment, but I think it is an instrument that enjoys to "sing" with others. The guitar is better for those edge solo's.

Whatever you choose martha
enjoy
go girl

Start off with the guitar, then move on to the cello? jk!

I do the cello, but I think you'll probably have more fun with the guitar

I took guitar lessons once in grade school, but didn't keep it up, but now I kinda wish I had.

How many U2 songs do you think you could play on a cello?

that might be kinda interesting tho!

a guitar would probably be easier to buy/rent and get lessons for.....oh yeah and you can't play u2 songs on a cello. well I suppose you COULD but it would sound pretty weird.

But what a great opening line when I meet Edge: "Gee, Edge, (innocent eyes) could you show me how to play Streets on my cello?"
