The first thing I thought of when I read the thread title was 'Good Vibrations'.

Well I do think Good Vibrations should be disqualified because I think the important thing here is artist intention. Was the song meant to be a stand-alone, or part of a greater whole. Had Wilson finished Smile when he meant to, Good Vibrations WOULD have been on there, as it was when he did complete it.

Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields were outtakes recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions., but for whatever reason were held until release as a single well before Magical Mystery Tour, and were only thrown on that LP to pad it.

Now as big of a Lennon fan (and McCartney detractor) as I am, I still have to say that Hey Jude is the most deserving of this thread's title. It was groundbreaking in terms of length, and it's just completely contagious. While I love Penny Lane, and think it's a great piece of composition and production, it's a little too breezy to be the Greatest Single. Hey Jude, however begins so simple and pretty (like many other McCartney staples) but just takes off into a rousing anthem. You just can't top that.

Personally, though, I find Strawberry Fields Forever and Revolution to be far superior works, and both are equally groundbreaking for their own reasons.
