Automatic For The People
Document
Monster

I looooooved Automatic, highly enjoyed Document, but haven't really enjoyed Monster yet. :|

I wanted to say NAIH, but since you didn't like Monster, I would have to say Out of Time or Up.

NAIHF - 1
Out Of Time - 1
Up - 1

Anyone here a fan of Reckoning? I've heard some from that. It sounds pretty good.

Monster is really kind of on its own, I think. If you don't care for it, I don't think it'll put you off any of their other albums.

NAIHF has some great songs, but another one of my favorites is Life's Rich Pageant. If you want the quintessential "REM sound" from the 80s, go for Reckoning.

Edit: Ha! Great minds think alike, Lemon.

I'd suggest you pick up either Life's Rich Pageant (my favorite R.E.M. album, with the quintessential R.E.M. song "I Believe") or Out of Time (their most popular album featuring "Losing My Religion", though it's hardly the best reason to buy the album. Country Feedback may be one of the greatest songs of all time, plus you NEED to hear Me in Honey, Half a World Away, and Texarkana).

So yeah, pick up those two next, in either order and I gaurantee you will be pleased. Not only are they R.E.M.'s two most provocative albums, but they are also their two most enjoyable, in my opinion.

And, if you are having trouble getting into Monster, I'd suggest you check out New Adventures in Hi-Fi as well. It's a sonic landscape of epic rock n' roll proportions. Songs like Leave, New Test Leper, and the AMAZING E-Bow (The Letter) featuring the Goddess Patti Smith are surely hook you, and show a side of R.E.M. that most people aren't aware of. If this album (recorded during the Monster Tour) can draw you in, you may then find more to like in Monster.

Hope this helps, and I hope you follow my advice. I think it's really the best course for you to take. ;)

I might, but these days it would be more of an insult rather than saying it's monstrously awesome.

I think I'll get Life's Rich Pageant next. Mostly because I don't have Fall On Me on anything. :shifty:

1,000th post!!!

If you want to continue in the '80s direction, then go for Green.

If you want to continue in the '90s direction, go for Out of Time, Up, New Adventures of Hi-Fi.

On September 12th, EMI will release the first comprehensive CD and DVD anthologies of R.E.M.'s 1980s I.R.S. Records catalog. The CD will be called And I Feel Fine…The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 and will be available in 2 formats: a 21-track single-disc collection of hits and band/fan favorites and a 2-CD Collector's Edition with a
second 21-track disc of rarities including alternate takes, demos, previously unreleased songs, mixes, and live recordings of classic R.E.M. The DVD, When the Light Is Mine The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 Video Collection, includes the music videos from Chronic Town through Document, as well as live television performances and James Herbert’s short film, Left of Reckoning. DVD extras feature early interviews and rare acoustic performances.

Bertis Downs had the following to say about the upcoming release: "This will be a noteworthy package of R.E.M.’s early years, which a lot of people don’t know very well. The guys themselves picked the songs to be included and sequenced the records, had some fun with the liner notes, and Michael and Chris coordinated on a lot of key aspects of the package (actually all key aspects of the package). As for “Why Now?” Well, for one thing, there has never been a real great retrospective of the 5 year/5 album period of R.E.M.’s history known as the I.R.S. years. For another, after 25 years (or 26 but who’s counting?), a recognition of the specialness of these recordings seemed a fine and appropriate thing, and we figured if the band and HQ staff here in Athens had some input, the world would end up with a package that truly has “something for everybody.” For the R.E.M. aficionado, there are some surprises and true rarities here that are sure to delight and amuse; for the uninitiated, or those who first came into the R.E.M. world during Stand or Losing My Religion or Daysleeper or Imitation of Life or Bad Day or Leaving New York, whether by factors of geography, or age, or siblings, or whatever reason, this is a good history lesson on the days of yore when the band first started out and were writing sometimes 2-3 songs a day, many of which became classics, and some of which were lost in the mists of tape and time and vault. So…with those sorts of considerations as the guiding lights and impetus, Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe and the rest of us are pleased to participate in this exercise of re-releasing the “hits” of their early years, accompanied by some great things that we had forgotten about, if we ever remembered them in the first place: And I Feel Fine… the Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982- 1987. The bonus disc is especially chock full of material for the experienced, discerning fan and the newcomer alike."

I'm looking forward to getting this for the live stuff and the DVD, but honest to pete, how many "best of" discs does this band need?

There was Eponymous, which already covered the IRS years. There was an import "best of REM," which I believed covered the IRS years as well, and then there was the more recent In Time, which has all the Warner Brothers stuff.

Sheesh. Record some new stuff, guys!

^
you're right, that's alot of Best Ofs

So does this mean there's gonna be a Warner Bros. material Best Of?

I want new material too, but if it's like Around the Sun, I'd rather have another Best Of / rarities / live DVD thing.

On the plus side, this means I can ditch my VHS of "REM Succumbs," the IRS years video collection when this new collection comes out.

All hail DVD!

It's so cool that they put Sitting Still on that compilation--it's in my R.E.M. Top 5.

As for LemonMelon's question, I'll go with the consensus and say Lifes Rich Pageant as it's my favorite. New Adventures is my 2nd fav, but you really shouldn't put off buying Murmur for much longer. It's a masterpiece, and blows sophomore slump Reckoning out of the water (despite the latter having a few great songs like So. Central Rain and Harborcoat).

If you want to hear the band at their most plastic and shallow (and poppy) pick up Green. But despite some well known tracks it's not one of their best, and is what people fear when indie bands sign with a major label.

When you turn 50, pick up Reveal and Around the Sun. You'll probably be into that type of music by then.

Ay yi yi! Sophomore slump?!? I could not disagree more.

:(

I will, however, join you in raving about Sitting Still.

If you're a fan of Radiohead-style quirkiness and sonic textures, I think both Up and New Adventures in Hi-Fi would be especially appealing.

Can't believe you don't have Out Of Time yet! I mean... Losing My Religion? C'mon! That said, LRP is excellent!

Agreed, Murmur and Reckoning are probably my over all favorite REM albums.
