I wanted to say NAIH, but since you didn't like Monster, I would have to say Out of Time or Up.

NAIHF - 1
Out Of Time - 1
Up - 1

Anyone here a fan of Reckoning? I've heard some from that. It sounds pretty good.

Monster is really kind of on its own, I think. If you don't care for it, I don't think it'll put you off any of their other albums.

NAIHF has some great songs, but another one of my favorites is Life's Rich Pageant. If you want the quintessential "REM sound" from the 80s, go for Reckoning.

Edit: Ha! Great minds think alike, Lemon.

I'd suggest you pick up either Life's Rich Pageant (my favorite R.E.M. album, with the quintessential R.E.M. song "I Believe") or Out of Time (their most popular album featuring "Losing My Religion", though it's hardly the best reason to buy the album. Country Feedback may be one of the greatest songs of all time, plus you NEED to hear Me in Honey, Half a World Away, and Texarkana).

So yeah, pick up those two next, in either order and I gaurantee you will be pleased. Not only are they R.E.M.'s two most provocative albums, but they are also their two most enjoyable, in my opinion.

And, if you are having trouble getting into Monster, I'd suggest you check out New Adventures in Hi-Fi as well. It's a sonic landscape of epic rock n' roll proportions. Songs like Leave, New Test Leper, and the AMAZING E-Bow (The Letter) featuring the Goddess Patti Smith are surely hook you, and show a side of R.E.M. that most people aren't aware of. If this album (recorded during the Monster Tour) can draw you in, you may then find more to like in Monster.

Hope this helps, and I hope you follow my advice. I think it's really the best course for you to take.

I might, but these days it would be more of an insult rather than saying it's monstrously awesome.

I think I'll get Life's Rich Pageant next. Mostly because I don't have Fall On Me on anything.

1,000th post!!!

New Adventures in Hi-Fi, Reveal and Up.

Those are my favorites. You shall buy them in that order, and you shall be happy.

New Adventures. Don't dismiss Around The Sun - it is a grower.
