he does... my friend and i were talking about just that the other day and trying to figure out, based on the contracts handed out htis off-season, how much johan santana would get if he were a free agent this year. we rationalized that if gil meche is worth 10+ million per year, johan's worth at least 30 million per season.

wonder what Rick Ankiel could get in today's outlandish free agent market get if he decided he wanted to pitch again.

He could get three shots at the mascot and then booted out of the game just like any season he tries to pitch.

I think the biggest contract per year given out this off season was to Jason Schmidt (3 yrs, 47 mil), so that's close to 16 mil per year. Roughly $500,000 grand per start.

Johan deserves at least double that.......so $30 mil sounds about right.

Hey, in regard to Bonds, I got up late today so it was news to me. Besides, I reported it here first! So, nanny nanny poo poo! Regardless, Bonds did the right thing and stayed with SF for his 15th season in the City by the Bay.

Is it wrong to hope he fractures his femur when he's 3 home runs shy of the record?

Former San Francisco Giants shortstop Jose Uribe was killed early Friday in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic.

yes because then he'll be back in 2008 and we'll have to deal with who he signs with and for how much again and then have to have it drag out another year and a half.

Just think: We're less than four months away from when the season starts. I hope Andy Pettite comes back to the Yankees. He should finish his career a Yankee. He just didn't look right in those Astro uniforms, especially those awful red ones. Plus, it was weird to see his name on the back of his jersey.

Otherwise, this offseason will probably be remembered for mostly mediocre players getting paid way too much.

I nearly drove off the road today when ESPN radio said the Royals won the "bidding war" for Gil Meche at 11mil per. What is the world coming to that Meche gets that kind of money and that the Royals of all teams is paying the amount.

Looks like you got your wish according to ESPN. I wonder where this leaves his BFF Mr. Clemens?

Yes, the Yanks signed Andy to 1 year, 16mil. I hope they don't get Clemens, though, which I don't think is likely because he won't pitch until after the All Star break. But, I guess anything is possible.

Andy Pettite and Randy Johnson will both make 16+ million dollars next year, and I don't think either of them will have an era below 4.50

its madness i tell you

16 million gets you a league average pitcher these days

andy pettitte, until proven otherwise, is a hell of a lot better than an "average" pitcher.

when gil meche is getting 11 per, 16 per for andy pettitte is a steal.

sure, his ERA was higher than normal last year... he still had a winning record for a team that basicly stunk for 90% of the season. he's just a year removed from a 17-9 season with a 2.09 ERA. he's started 30+ games in 10 of his 12 seasons, and in those years where he's started at least 30 games he's won an average of just below 17 games. and to top it all off he's a proven money post-season performer.

average he is not. i'd take him over chris carpenter in a heartbeat.
