wedding beats

my sister is friggin getting married in a couple weeks.

she wants me to make a compilation of beats for the dance

"We still need about two or three more compilations of dancy, upbeat music for the dance (yes, a dance!). Why don't you do some research and think of some stuff? We also have some suggestions to get you going. Send us the list you think of and we can soncfirm it. So...atmosphere...funk, jazz, old school 80's"

you'll be my research

she's wants loveshack and some others for certain.

But I'm also thinking Moloko, maybe something from kish kash
probably the Avalanches

waht do you think?

is there a saint ettiene song that would work?

I'm thinking sylvia...but I don't want to get too spacey

What Avalanches will you use?

This has nothing to do with the types of music they're looking for, but 'Love Comes Again' by Tiesto (featuring BT) seems to be a great dance track (I dig it atleast). I even saw it on some 'Best of Dance 2004' compilation cd today. Also, 'Such Great Heights' by Postal Service?

'80's/funk - 'Jungle Love' by Morris Day and the Time. Sure it's stupid, but it's both funk and '80's, and lots of people love it. (you may find it in my 'misc' folder on soulseek.....stupid Jay and Silent Bob movie got it in my head....)

For some other good '80's dance type songs I'd recommend 'Bust a Move' by Young MC or 'It's Tricky' by Run DMC. Both hip hop, but pretty classic '80's-wise. Fun songs too. I also have both of those in the so called 'hip hop' section of files. Alphaville has a dance mix of 'Forever Young' that was fairly popular and decent. Not sure if it's upbeat enough. I'm sure something by Duran Duran would work, etc.

Yes, these are all terrible picks, but what do you expect?

My dad likes Tone Loc.

Should we be ashamed if we like him too? You make the call.

Here's some old school 80's. I've listed "sure thing" songs which are going to be the songs most people would pick and then a few wild cards which are perhaps lesser known but still quite good and quite upbeat:

B-52's:
Sure thing: Rock Lobster
Wild card: Strobe Light
*Double Secret Wild Card : Dirty Back Road

Stray Cats:
Sure thing: Rock This Town
Wild card: Stray Cat Strut or Sexy & 17

Dexy’s Midnight Runners:
Sure thing: Come On Eileen

Billy Idol:
Sure thing: Mony Mony or Dancing With Myself

Oingo Boingo:
Sure thing: Who Do You Want To Be

The English Beat:
Sure Thing: Hands Off… She’s Mine
Wild Card for the 5 hangers-on sitting at the back corner table and doing shots at the end of the night: Click Click

Bangles:
Sure Thing: Walk Like an Egyptian

The Clash:
Sure Thing: Should I Stay or Should I Go

Kool & The Gang:
“Celebration” is going to be the obvious choice for most people – and that’s understandable - but I’d go with “Fresh” or “Mislead,” which both absolutely groove.

The Cure:
Sure Thing: Why Can’t I Be You?

*Nobody will have heard this sweet-ass, groovy little song.

As a side note, I used to videotape weddings freelance. One thing that became apparent to me after being present at many wedding receptions is that all the dj's were using pretty much the same, safe playlist -- and I found it uninspiring. My choice would be to play more "wild cards" and fewer of the obvious choices. On the other hand, you've got to keep the music upbeat and the dance floor moving. It is a bit of a challenge but I think you can take chances and be wildly successful. But I digress.....
