Yes, chili peppers. I think the two areas have similar food because they have been producing foods for thousands of years. Mesoamerica and the Middle East (spreading into northern Africa and Asia) were the first major areas of states and food production. Hot climates and years of trial and error have probably brought the two close together in food.
