I was thinking of making a mix for a girl for Valentine's Day, a "holiday" I'm normally against, but she's cool enough to make it worthwhile. She's a big U2 fan, likes Radiohead, Keane, and good Coldplay but apart from that, I'm not sure what else. What do you guys think of this tentative list and would you do the same thing for a special someone on Valentine's Day?

1. You Get What You Give by The New Radicals
2. Heroes by David Bowie
3. Here Comes Your Man by Pixies
4. We Will Become Silhouettes by The Shins
5. Mushaboom by Feist
6. This Time Tomorrow by The Kinks
7. High and Dry by Radiohead
8. The Man in Me by Bob Dylan
9. 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) by Bruce Springsteen
10. One (Pavarotti and Friends Version) by Bono, Brian Eno, The Edge, Michael Kamen, a big-ass orchestra
11. Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles
12. She's a Rainbow by The Rolling Stones
13. To the End by Blur
14. Savannah Smiles by Okkervil River
15. Fade Together by Franz Ferdinand
16. Perfect Day by Lou Reed
17. The Way I Feel Inside by The Zombies
18. Do You Realize?? by The Flaming Lips
19. With or Without You by Keane
20. No Cars Go by Arcade Fire

definitely a good idea, I think. mix CD's are the best present anyway, my friends and I make them all the time for each other. and I'd fucking die of happiness if a guy I liked made me one.

especially if she's actually into your music.
it's a more thoughtful gift and she can listen to it and feel all special and all.

do some people think it's lame or tacky or something?

anyway it looks good.
the Cat Power version of Sea of Love is really good...it's kind of popular now bc it was on the Juno soundtrack. it's a good song but I dunno maybe it's a little much for your purposes. sleeping together? haha

8. The Man Inside Me by Tobias Funke

Fixed it for you.

But seriuslee, it's a good mix and a good idea too. A good mixtape can be an instant pantie dropper. Or just a sweet thing to do. Or both.

I think she'll dig it.

Very good mix, I think. No good Valentine's mix can be without something by Pulp  , and don't be afraid to throw some soul on there for a more eclectic feel.

Thanks, guys.

I had a 6 hour rough mix that was whittled down, so I lost some funk/r&b along the way. If it were a 2-CD set, I'd definitely include more.

Beck - Debra
Prince - Little Red Corvette
Pulp - Babies

Women like men who know what they want.

There are some great choices on there  The only song I question at all is One. If you're up for suggestions, I suggest any of the following in its place: In A Little While, Slow Dancing, Stay (which would be twice as good considering it would come after High and Dry), Can't Help Falling In Love, or Sweetest Thing.

Regardless, it's a very good mix. I wish somebody would make me a mix for Valentine's Day :grumpy:

Yes, pick Stay.

Or WGRYWH

I had Lover's Spit in contention for a while and put that version of One on there because I don't think she's heard it before... then again, I'm not sure if she's heard Stay.

Chris Carter and Internet Ira Steven Behr must be lurking.

Give her the gift of your bastardy man pipe instead. Kind of like "Dick in a Box", only minus the box.

Here is the mix tape I would give to a lucky someone. This is dedicated to VertigoGal, BonoIsMyMuse and everyone else who would love a mix tape. Here's to hoping you get one, one day. If you would like this mix tape I would love to e-mail it to someone. Tell me what you guys think.

1. Lover’s Spit (Redux) by Broken Social Scene
2. Marry Me by St. Vincent
3. Politik by Coldplay
4. Pictures Of You by The Cure
5. As The World Falls Down by David Bowie
6. Coin-Operated Boy by The Dresden Dolls
7. Falling Slowly by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová
8. Mysteries Of Love by Julee Cruise
9. Just Like Anyone by Aimee Mann
10. Humdrum by Peter Gabriel
11. Running Scared by Roy Orbison
12. Kiss From A Rose by Seal
13. Cliché by Todd Rundgren
14. This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush
15. Stay by U2

Sea of Love was a great suggestion, maybe Wild Is the Wild, too.

If you need something a bit more upbeat...

Wilco - I'm Always In Love

or Heavy Metal Drummer.

I'm Always in Love was in consideration, too, but it was tossed for The Shins track - they sound too similar.

Nothing wrote with not whittling it down. Last year, for Valentine's Day (because I was living in Japan while she was still in Chicago), I made my girl a three-disc, vaguely conceptual (ie, I picked songs for the way they sounded rather than their lyrics, which--surprise!--makes the discs a lot more easy to listen to), Magnetic Fields-esque masterpiece. The first disc of often brittle, acoustic-tinged songs, the second of soaring anthems, and the third, of course, slo-jamz. Well, maybe not quite all, or even largely, slo-jamz. Either way, it was a good way to end things--with a laugh, with a wink, and with a smile.
