I think most Catholics have a middle name.

I have a middle name, but I don't use it for anything, it just sort of sits there.

Don't russians use the patronymic in a formal sense occasionally?

anyway, i have never heard any people in england use their middle name - maybe its done more in the states but ive never really noticed.

we don't usually use them in the States in terms of addressing someone with it. You would use it signing some formal documents, etc. or your mom might use it when she's really upset with you. lol.

Yep I think this is the real reason for middle names...to determine the anger level of a parent...if you hear your middle name used, run!

Agreed, If a parent uses your middle name it's time to run. I always knew I was in trouble when my mother would list my all my siblings names followed by "whoever you are, get down here!!" yipe.

Thanks. You don't have to look at it if it's that bad.

If you're Catholic and you got confirmed, you get yet ANOTHER NAME. So I have....4. My neices each have 4 names to start out with. By the time they get married, they'll have 6!! Crazy!

You only use someone's middle name if you're mad at them...that's how my parents operate, anyhow.

We use middle names to differentiate us from all the other John Smiths here...

really. When I was a kid people kept getting mixed up with a grown woman that had my name...the only way to differentiate was our middle names...she was a Lee and I was a Sue...

We Americans also have the habbit of using surnames as middle names...usually a first son might be given the mom's maiden name as a middle name...I did that with my son cause there were no boys to carry on my dad's last name...I've had British friends who upon hearing them thought they were those hyphenated names like they have...like Barker-Finch. Double barrelled names...except we don't call them that...they are just the first and middle name...no hyphen.

Well, I know the French moms wouldn't use it, they've got 4 middle names to go thru before they actually start the wine-inspired yelling.

No...my middle name is also my mother's middle name though.
