Underworld Appreciation Thread

:attn:

Ah Yes this is one of the bands which have been the most underrated and important in the last decade

And they arent spring chickens either, for two of the remaining members have been around since the early 80s, where they were struggling to generate one-hit wonders in that era of cheesey music, and bad fashion

but it proved to be pretty obvious they were held back creatively in that decade, when the album Dubnobasswithmyheadman came out, many naive australians bought the album because they just fell in love with that stupid song 'Underneath the Radar' and they were in for a rude shock of their lives

For one lyrics and vocals proved to be inconsequential, and a bold approach of making the music to move the listener, for one they proved that trance and hard house music was actually intelligent

The single Born Slippy which came out after Dubnobass proved to be one of the biggest anthems in the last decade

and one of the most incredible albums of music, and arguably the least commercial friendly, Second Toughest in the Infants followed up Born Slippy. and without the constraints of time limits, this album featured epics of what felt like what was almost atmospheric rock in the class of Pink Floyd, featuring intuitive guitar work, tough breakbeats and incredible genius in incorporating 'layers' in mutating each and every song to the point you dont remember what the song sounded like at the start

The last album was a bit of a disappointment, but Underworld had by then changed the way people saw techno music

We eagerly await the next album, its long overdue and its bound to be a cracker

I love a great deal of Underworld songs a huge amount, so it was really hard to pick one, but I went with Dirty Epic.. cause I just felt like it... other huge favs are Born Slippy (i think it rivals streets live on the everything everything video, it's very wow), Moaner, Mmm Skyscraper I love you, Pearl's Girl.

Can anyone fill me in on anything about the new album or what's up with them lately?

Definately one of my favourite groups of all time.

damn, it seems like not a lot of people here have heard of them here

which is too bad because some of the guitar work the impeccable timing of usage of various instruments which makes this band so difficult to categorise

ok they are not rock for one, but they used to be one, and they are not trance because trance has almost as less credibility as nu metal and is not all that intelligent

for a fine example of what Underworld is all about i strongly suggest the album 'second toughest in the infants' you might find the cd in the techno, ambient, house section of the store, alongside Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, MuZiq, Boards of Canada, Plaid

but dont let that put you off

BUY BUY BUY!

er... then again if you want a good introduction for this band i suggest the 1994 album Dubnobasswithmyheadman, think of them as a bit of a U2 remix specialist, but that there are no Temple bar, original edits etc etc...

I read somewhere that Underworld did remixes of Mofo and Discotheque; they've never been released though, which is a damn shame.

I went with Dirty Epic, however Underneath the Radar will always hold a special place in my heart.

I say Underworld need more attention. This is more like an underappreciation thread

I thought there were some more people here who knew of 'em and sang their praises... come on, let's all have an underworld party!

Oh yeah... 8 Ball is a wicked song by them.

man that song is totally NOT what Underworld is about
they are a band which has gone on the trip to the dark side and that 80s band 'which holds a place in someone's heart' does not exist anymore

when you talk about changes in music, you think U2 with the Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby, but that was only a rock band spoiled brat version of U2, the essence of U2 was still there with The Edge's Guitar, Larry's hard hitting drums, adam's ability to keep everyone in time with his bass, and Bono's yearning vocals

Underworld underwent a total teardown let alone a change, the no longer wrote songs that had any resemblance to that late 80s period, they still had singing but the singer's style had changed, there were still lyrics, but they didnt make any sense any more.

Though many people would remember Underworld from the late 80s because that was the period of time people did weird things to themselves, and were in total denial over what would happen to music and the world over the next decade, mohawks and nose spikes were cool once, now people just think you look stupid

100 days off

and furthermore
their next album is due out for release in september its titled 100 days off

one of the members has left but that means that the band has had to go back to the formula it had employed for their 1994 album Dubnobasswithmyheadman which featured the hits Dirty Epic and Cowgirl

but knowing the band, they will be predictably unpredictable, featuring extremely tough breakbeats, a touch of trance, and a guarantee to make you move without the need to be on drugs
