Wilco's Tweedy in rehab clinic

Greg Kot - Chicago Tribune
Published April 5, 2004

Wilco singer Jeff Tweedy canceled a European promotional trip for the band's new album last week to check himself into a Chicago rehab clinic.

Tweedy has had a long history of migraines, and has unsuccessfully battled them with prescription painkillers. In response to the rehab stint, Wilco's Nonesuch label has postponed release of the band's fifth album, "A Ghost is Born," by two weeks, to June 22.

The band, recently expanded to a sextet, was to begin a brief tour April 21 in Missouri and ending June 1 at the Coachella Festival in California, but a Wilco spokesman said a decision won't be made until this week about whether those dates will be fulfilled.

Hopefully they won't have to cancel too much. :(

He looked so dreadful in the DVD documentary and the scene where he is throwing up because of a migraine disturbed me because how can you live with migraines like that your whole life and not get to the bottom of it? I'm glad he's addressing it. I just quite selfishly wish it weren't this particular month. :grumpy:

Spring US tour is cancelled. My show is cancelled.

We're sorry to announce that Wilco have to cancel the first 8 dates of their planned spring tour. Refunds for all dates (except Coachella) will be available through the promoters and if you purchased tickets via Wilcoworld/Music Today that money will automatically be refunded to your credit card (please be patient). Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. We fully expect all dates after May 1 to go off as scheduled, click here to view those dates..

See you out there soon... but just a little later than we'd hoped.

Ryan Schreiber reports:
Wilco have revealed that they are aborting their previously announced eight-date April U.S. tour, allowing frontman Jeff Tweedy more time in rehab to treat an addiction to pain medication. Tweedy was admitted to a Chicago-based rehabilitation facility earlier this month to treat his addiction to the pills, which he been taking to combat recurring migraine headaches. All dates of the tour, which was to serve as a sort of warm-up for a much larger tour promoting their upcoming full-length, A Ghost Is Born, have now been called off, including the band's May 1st performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. Ticketholders may obtain refunds for any of these shows, excepting Coachella.

"Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause," the band's official website reads. "We fully expect all dates after May 1 to go off as scheduled... See you out there soon... but just a little later than we'd hoped." Cancellations:

04-21 Columbia, MO - Blue Note
04-23 New Orleans, LA - Orpheum
04-24 Austin, TX - Stubb's BBQ
04-25 Austin, TX - Stubb's BBQ
04-27 Santa Fe, NM - Lensic Theatre
04-28 Flagstaff, AZ - Orpheum
04-29 Tucson, AZ - Rialto Theatre

In the meantime, the band plans to make up for this sudden change of plans with an(other) extensive European tour, as well as U.S. dates in Pittsburgh, Poughkeepsie, D.C., and Manchester, TN. They'll kick off the newly announced 24-date stint on May 28th at Barcelona's Primavera Sound Festival, and hit the States on June 6th at the absolutely free Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh. Alas, after just four shows, culminating with Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival on June 11th, the band will head back overseas to hit various European festivals and venues. Dates:

In other Wilco news, the band has begun streaming A Ghost Is Born over their website in its entirety, following what seems to be quickly becoming Wilco tradition: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was also streamed prior to its official release in 2002. Just in case you forgot, A Ghost Is Born will hit stores June 22nd on Nonesuch.

9:30 Club (in D.C.) is one of the best venues (small clubs) in the country. All you have to do is not get mugged coming out of it after a show!

Have tickets gone on sale for that show?
