I went to see an exhibit of Ottoman Turkish rugs at the art museum today. It's an amazing exhibit of rugs and ceramics from various cities in what is now western Turkey. The rugs date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and were all made by women who learned spinning and weaving as girls. This was an important skill taught to all young women in both villages and nomadic communities. The designs are amazing. They are very intricate. They are all prayer rugs, used by Muslims in the mosques during the prayer services. They blew my mind!
