tulip trivia

Everyone thinks of tulips as being from the Netherlands. They are, but they are native to Central Asia and were grown there before the first imports to the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. This is a little thingie about tulips in Turkey.

Well, the modern tulips are coming from the Netherlands though.

I knew this! Tulip trivia about the Netherlands is more interesting though! Did y'all know that the reason The Netherlands is so big in flowers is that in large regions the topsoil had been removed in order to heighten the villages and cities to protect them from the water, and that the subsoil proved to be excellent material for growing flowers on. At one point, trade in tulips became that big that people were making money by selling options on tulips alone. Once the word on that came out, it caused (probably) the world's first stock crash. True story.

My grade school friends and I had to learn this right away b/c we are pretty much all Dutch, the first or second generation in the US. I'm pretty sure I had at least one story book about tulips and where they came from and I know we studied it in school.

Hehe, you should see Pella (where Phil is from). They have a town square/commons lawn place that has a huge statue/shrine to Tulip Time. He insists their festival is way better than Holland's.

You're right, Dr. Teeth, the tulip market in the Netherlands caused the first stock market crash! I didn't know that about the topsoil thing. You learn something every day.
