That is so sad that TR is going out of buisness..There is a huge store 5 minutes away from me...now where am I going to get my imports and magazine..I mean I have to travel a lot farther

Well I guess I need to hit those going out of buisness sales !!

I know it sucks So badly. I went yesterday and bought. Bruce Springsteens latest Album, 2pac (All Eyez on Me Collectors Edition) and the Halo 2 Soundtrack. I plan to go back and buy more. Good Bye Tower. We'll miss you. What about there website, I wonder if that will be shut down too or will they continue to sell online?

I thought TW was gone for a long long time...Me and my friend use to go there a lot but it like went out of business...

like 4 years ago...

Many of the stores had closed years ago. I guess this is the final nail in the coffin, so to speak :|

That was when they first declared Bankruptcy. They attributed the loss of business to, yup you guessed it, online downloading of music.

I attribute the loss of business to them thinking that people are retarded enough to spend twenty fucking dollars on an album. This is easily the best news in history. Fuck Tower Records.

Just use Amazon, people.

And, you know, save like $15.

That's a bit harsh...coming from the city where Tower Records was conceived I found Tower to be the ultimate store for all your music needs in the 80's and 90's. Stores like Best Buy, Circuit City and Walmart, which can sell CD's and music for a loss due to profits in their other inventory, killed all the music specialty stores.

Tower Records doesn't sell CD for $17 - $20 because they can, but because that is what the Industry sets the price at and in order to make a profit that's what the company has to sell them at that price. The other stores have come in and undercut them. Don't get me wrong I buy most of my music at Best Buy ( ) so I'm as guilty as anyone for putting Tower out of business.

I will miss the book store (where in 1990 - 91 I spent every weekend looking at import music magazines for information on the new U2 album) and the Import section in Records. I will miss my occasional visits to L.A. and seeing the Tower Records on Sunset (where I bought a copy of U2-3 in 1984!!). I will miss queuing up in line to buy my tickets for various shows. I will just miss this store period.

So go ahead and castigate Tower for trying to stay alive and selling their CDs at $20 or whatever offends you, but understand there is a lot of history behind this store than just that.

I don't give a shit about the history of Tower Records. I give a shit about being financially raped for music I can get a lot cheaper at, like, 400 other places. Used record stores, online marketplaces and a host of other "locations" both real and electronic have far better selections and prices. Them's the breaks.

Also, it was more expensive in Chicago to buy tickets to shows at Tower than it was to buy them anywhere else. Go figure. I can sympathize if you have solid memories of the place, but they were still gougers, regardless of what the motivation may or may not have been. It's a fact.

I don't work near a Tower, but my boyfriend does. He said that tomorrow the Tower on Wabash in Chi-town is "closed for inventory" and that the dvds and music are 15% off (I think). still not a super deal, but maybe that'll change after they do their inventory.

Tower has always had a good selection of singles I could not find elsewhere...That is why I liked shopping there.

The "liquidation" is due to the fact that none of the labels will send them any new merchandise because they (Tower) are unable to pay for what they have right now.

I do not live within 100 miles of a Tower - but would always make a stop at one in my travels to cities that did have one.

:hmm:

Actually, there were alot of CD's that were reasonably priced (anywhere from $9.99 to $12.99) ... so I don't think it had to do with consumers "shopping elsewhere" that put Tower at risk for closure.

According to last month's issue of Rolling Stone ... there was an article stating how Tower was in 'financial debt' because they owed several millions of dollars to almost every Record label in the music industry.

So it makes me wonder how much of their 'music sales' they were pocketing ... instead of paying back the Record labels their fair share.

:tsk:

Tower just made the classis business mistake a market leader makes. Failing to re-invent themselves and make changes while they were still ahead. There's a reason places like Starbucks, Wal-Mart (yuck) get into selling different things, offering different services, etc. They do it while they're still ahead, trying to anticipate the next trend.

What could Tower have done ? Don't know for sure. Started closing down stores earlier for sure. Move their business to mostly online maybe ? Offer digital downloads ? Sell used CD's, merge with another retailer like maybe Best Buy, Borders or GameStop or something, I really don't have the answer. However, you do NOT need to sell CD's at $17 to make a profit, and Tower did absolutely nothing in terms of being innovative and staying ahead of the impending internet/big box store monsters. Nothing.

That's why they failed.

The Tower records we used to have in Glasgow city centre used to be great to go in, if a little pricey but it's been closed about 5 years! Saw a few famous faces in there too, inc. Tori Amos&Shirley Manson

They were the shop i used to go for specialist mags like Hot Press, before Borders opened here!

God thanks to Tower I found deep U2 cuts...I got about every single ever done there...this makes me sad:(

No Tower's sales prices on New Releases never matched the Circuit City/Best Buy/Walmart's. They were always $1 - $3 more. Tower tried selling used CD's but found that it cut into their sales of newer material so they killed it. Tower never did adapt to the new online explosion, so hence they go away.

And whether you care or not I will miss Tower and all that they were back in the day...

wow, what a mature response. okay then, what about the thousands of people out of a job? i don't mean the ceo or anything, i'm talking about cashiers and stockpeople.

or do you not care about them either?

I'm not trying to upset anybody, here...I seriously just don't give a shit about a price-gouging, shitty store. Still, I simply cannot go without responding to the misguided foolishness of this particular post.

I have no clue what led you to believe that my saying that Tower's prices were too high meant that I wanted to destroy the lives of the store's employees. This conclusion is of course all the more laughable because not a single person in this thread brought up this issue; if you want to damn me for something I neither said nor implied, then I would encourage you to do the same thing for everybody else.

Additionally, there were only a few dozen Tower Records stores all across the nation, meaning that your claim of "thousands" of people being out of work is in fact accurate. I know that this sounds shitty, but the simple fact of the matter is that a few thousand jobs (tops) doesn't mean a fucking thing. There are infinitely more than a few thousands jobs which these same people will be able to fill up, right quick. And since we're only talking about the in-store employees, I think I'm all the more right--there are dozens and dozens of minimum wage jobs out there in this free market, capitalist economy (love the system or hate it, this is all the same an undeniable truth). I should know, because I was working them to put myself through college, the last few years. I quit a few of 'em, too, and believe it or not, my life didn't end. Instead of watching my life unravel around me, I...you know...got other jobs.

If I came up in this piece and was like, "Dude, Tower Records is so shitty that I think all the stockboys should be hung in the town square," then I could understand your hatin' on my post as you did. As it stands, though, it's ludicrous. Frankly, I'm even a bit insulted by your unspoken implication that we as music consumers should shop at a given store and support its outrageously high, exploitative prices in order to make sure that its employees get their paychecks. You never said that, and I doubt that you meant it; I will take the high road and NOT put words in your mouth or. Still, such a thought is the unfortunate logical extreme of your position.

I am done ranting. I guess, as a hard-line socialist, I have problems with somebody telling me that I don't give a shit about my own kind. I fucking hate it, in fact, especially since it's neither true nor did anybody have any reason to think thusly. Holla.

What I'm most curious about, if you shout..., is why you appear to be so angry against Tower Records? Your language alone makes it sound like they've seriously did you wrong. Is it that much of a crime they charge too much? Makes me wonder what feelings you harbor for places like Saks 5th Ave, Tiffany's, et cetera. :crack:

Edit: Actually your response to Khan is even more agitated. Do you need a ?

Wow!

My selfish consumer will miss Tower but when I called the Nashville store to ask how long it will remain open, my inner socialist chatted up the guy on the phone in a spirit of solidarity, recommending a generous severance package including free records and paid time off (I don't think Tower is offering that).

Wager on when our mods move this thread to FYM?

Personally, I think that it is, yeah. You're 200% right in thinking that I might have pretty bad things to say about these other places you mention...as well as a great many others. For me, it's a rational hatred, but I know that a lot of people don't feel the same way.

I would say "frustrated" more than agitated, by the way. Honestly. Highly, highly, highly frustrated. I'm good for hugs, though. I actually got three unsolicited hugs from random children, today--it was heartwarming. Japan is where it's at, people...I"m telling you!
