No kidding. What an epic solo ride by Landis that last day in the Alps. Everyone keeps criticizing the teams that other leaders were on, but I just don't think they had the energy to do anything about it - that's how good he was that day. He definitely deserved to win.

Tour de France winner failed drug test in race

Tour de France champion Floyd Landis tested positive for high levels of testosterone during the race, his Phonak team said Thursday on its Web site.

The statement came a day after the UCI, cycling’s world governing body, said an unidentified rider had failed a drug test during the Tour.

The Swiss-based Phonak team said it was notified by the UCI on Wednesday that Landis’ sample showed “an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone” when he was tested after stage 17 of the race last Thursday.

Cycling has to be one of the dirtiest sports out there.

This is a shame.

Cycling has to be the dirtiest most doped up "sport" there is. Can anyone really ever have any faith that any rider is clean?

well, we'll have to wait another 10 days to hear the results of the second test

there are more cyclists with a huge amount of testosterone
I do hope Landis will be cleared for the sake of cycling

that being said
none o fus could do what those cyclists have to do for even one day
we'd needed to be hospitalised for a month
and they are expected to perform like that for 3 weeks
they will need to change the hardness of the tour

Landis told me he "can't be hopeful" that the B sample will be any different than the A. "I'm a realist," he said.

Landis says that an elevated level of testosterone is different from a positive test. He says this is a fairly common problem among pro cyclists. He's retaining the services of a Spanish doctor named Luis Hernandez, who has helped other riders shown by tests to have elevated levels of testosterone. "In hundreds of cases," Landis told me, "no one's ever lost one."

It's too early to tell if he's going to be on solid footing or if he's clutching at straws. The next step, he says, is to submit to an endocrine test that may help him prove that he just happens to be a guy walking around with an inordinate amount of testosterone in his blood.

He raised the possibility that the cortisone shots he's been taking for his ravaged right hip -- the hip he'll soon have replaced -- may have had some effect on the test. Then he revealed this: "I've had a thyroid condition for the last year or so and have been taking small amounts of thyroid hormone. It's an oral dose, once a day."

He raised the possibility that that medication may have skewed the test that appears to damn him.

He knows how bad this looks, and told me, "I wouldn't hold it against somebody if they don't believe me."

That being said, I guarantee Landis can't do my job for one day either.

Athletes are in better shape nowadays than they ever have, the "hardness" of the tour shouldn't be an issue. It is what it always has been.

The Tour was way harder before.

Landis was in the shadow of Lance Armstrong, he is 30/31, it was an unique opportunity to win the Tour, to make money, to be in the legend.....
That's life.

I hope for Floyd that he's cleared. I was really impressed with him this year both in his riding and as a person. It'd be a fucking shame if he was a doper.

For now though, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt until the second test result is released. Innocent until proven guilty. If the second test comes back positive and it turns out that it wasn't the cortisone shots or thyroid pills (ie. a legitimate reason), then I'll lose my respect for him.

I knew this Tour was too good to be true...

I can't see the B sample being different from the A. They are, after all, taken at the same time. I'll hold out hope, but this is a real shame if true...
