I might be in the minority, but I think R.E.M. got significantly better from Monster onwards, with distorted reverb and new-found weirdness. New Adventures in Hi-Fi is one of my favourite albums of all time.

My top ten, no order:

Strange Currencies
E-bow The Letter
Orange Crush
Imitation of Life
What's The Frequency, Kenneth?
So Fast, So Numb
Be Mine
Walk Unafraid
Binky The Doormat
New Test Leper

I agree, my favorite R.E.M. stuff is from 1987 - 1998. Michael Stipe was finally audible

I still remember the day Monster was released. It was a foggy Tuesday in the fall of 1994. (Ok, I'm guessing at the foggy part, but it's a safe bet, since it's always foggy here.) I also remember that it was released on the same day as Nirvana's MTV Unplugged album. So, I had a choice to make: purchase one of the last recordings of a fallen grunge hero and lament his loss while weeping, like my friends...or try something different.

Different

I will always think Kurt Cobain's one of the most overrated figures in rock history. With Michael Stipe, Eddie Vedder, Billy Corgan being some of the most underrated.

Monster kicks so much ass! God, I love that album! I even like stuff like Circus Envy towards the end of this rarely-talked-about album.
