here's the idea.
Pick a director, rank their top 5 films in your opinion
debate, discuss, whatever

repeats are certainly part of the deal, we probably all have a top 5 Spielberg, just for example

I'll start with one of my very favs, Michael Mann

1. Heat-quite possibly the most underrated movie ever
2. Manhunter-great movie, great performances, underrated again
3. Last of the Mohicans-Daniel Day Lewis owns, great score
4. The Insider-Russel Crowe's best performance, Pacino is tits
5. Collateral-a casting choice from a classic (Cruise) He was still good though, actually he's usually good just recently gone apeshit.

6. special mention-creator of Miami Vice, a great show.

Okay, I'll do my Spielberg list, it's inevitable.

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark-the best action movie ever
2. Saving Private Ryan-the best 30-40 minutes of action in American cinema ever (Normandy scene) 3. Schindlers List-Simply powerful (tie) Jaws
4. Close Encounters-greatness, it still holds up
5. Indy and the Last Crusade-dare I say again, underrated. This movie is tits all day long.

Tim Burton

1. Ed Wood - his magnum opus; it's quirky, funny, serious, pathetic, odd, inspiring all at the same time. Plus every actor was on their A-game here, except Sarah Jessica Parker :yuck:
2. Beetlejuice - A pantheon performance from Michael Keaton + authentic crazyness + Danny Elfman score = winnahhh.
3. Batman - The best superhero film up until Sam Raimi's Spiderman. Keaton and Nicholson are spectacular, and Burton puts his signature spin on a classic.
4. Pee Wee's Big Adventure - It's fucking Pee Wee Herman
5. Edward Scissorhands - The movie where I fell in love with Winona Ryder (this and Reality Bites), just a classic in every sense.

I'll probably come back with my inevitable Spielberg list and others.

I'm only surprised that Edward Scissorhands isn't higher...brilliant!

My David Lynch list:

1. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me- Maybe the movie that fans are most divided over. The mix of quirky humor and dark themes makes this his best film in my opinion. Sheryl Lee should have got an Oscar nod.
2. Blue Velvet- This film is amazing! Kyle MacLachlan is so incredible in it. You will never listen to Roy Orbison the same way after watching this film.
3. The Elephant Man- This film is one of the few movies that actually moved me and has stuck with me ever since.
4. Wild At Heart- This movie just always finds its way into my DVD player. The car crash scene with Sherlynn Fenn is one of the most moving moments in film.
5. Eraserhead- A movie unlike anything you could dream of seeing.

Robert Zemeckis

1.Forrest Gump
2.Back To The Future II
3.Back To The Future
4.Back To The Future III
5.TIE: Castaway/Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Zemeckis is great...Contact is one of my favorite movies, ever. Yet, you didn't list it. Have you seen it? (I'd put it at #2 on his list, behind Gump)

Peter Jackson

1. King Kong
2. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
3. The Frighteners (so underrated)
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
5. Heavenly Creatures

BTTF 2 before BTTF, you are bold sir :applaud:

I love both to no end, I don't care for III as much except for the last 30 minutes.

My Zemeckis List:

1. Back to the Future
2. Forrest Gump
3. Back to the Future Part II
4. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
5. Contact / Cast Away (tie)

and I might be the only person who liked Death Becomes Her

For the record, I agree with BTTF II over part 1. Both awesome movies.

Back to the Future 2 is the best sequel ever, period. (yes, including the Godfather movies)

Great choice of director, BTW. I'd put Contact 3rd, personally.
Contact, Heat, same league, criminally underrated movies.

Christopher Guest

1. Waiting for Guffman
2. Best in Show
3. A Mighty Wind
4. Almost Heroes
5. The Big Picture

I can't wait until For Your Consideration comes out

Spielberg:

1. Saving Private Ryan
2. Jurassic Park
3. Jaws
4. War of the Worlds
5. Last Crusade

:D

saw it twice ya'know

I'm assuming you never read the original novel?

If you haven't, and you still enjoy Spielbergs movie, I'd reccomend you never do. ;) He butchered just about everything that made the novel interesting and captivating.

I don't think Stevie ruined War of the Worlds, but Captain Xenu did.

He also ruined the rewatchability of almost all of his movies, same with Mel Gibson.

Martin Scorcese

1. Taxi Driver
2. Goodfellas
3. Raging Bull
4. The Last Temptation of Christ
5. Gangs of New York

Joe Dante (makes extremely enjoyable movies)

1. Innerspace
2. The 'burbs
3. Gremlins
4. Gremlins 2: The New Batch
5. Small Soldiers

John Carpenter

1. Big Trouble in Little China
2. The Thing
3. Escape from New York
4. Halloween
5. They Live!

3.Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi
4.Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
5.TIE: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace/Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones

Although I think Lucas might not have directed Empire and Return.

Mel Brooks

1. Young Frankenstein
2. Blazing Saddles
3. History of the World, Part 1
4. Spaceballs
5. High Anxiety

James Cameron
1. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

3. Multiplicity
4. Groundhog Day

you are correct.

Irvin Kershner directed The Empire Strikes Back and Richard Marquaand directed Return of the Jedi.

He did direct THX 1138 and American Graffiti though, if you need replacements.
