I was trying to figure out my list in my head this morning and had quite some difficulty. So now I'll use this board as an excuse to put it into text. Here's my list.

1. Bono
2. Freddy Mercury
3. Micheal Hutchence
4. David Byrne
5. Micheal Stipe

not in any order

Elvis
Jim Morrison
Mick Jagger
Freddie Mercury
Bono

honorable mentions Michael Stipe, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Dave Gahan

these lists are boring.

i wonder if some of you have ever even watched the people you put in your lists?

here's mine.

1. the two dude's from air supply, especially when they kiss after singing 'holiday love'. that's my favourite.

2. kevin drew

3. butler from arcade fire

4. beck

5. thom yorke

Not the 'best', perhaps, but my favourites from growing up:

1. Dennis Bergkamp
2. Robbie Fowler
3. Alan Shearer
4. Thierry Henry
5. Davor Suker

Honourable mention: Marcus Stewart. Ah, the days.

yeah, like do they at least have to be people we've seen live?

jimmy g (murphy's law)
steven page/edge robertson (barenaked ladies)
mike mccolgan (street dogs, since i never saw him with dkm)
al barr (dropkick murphys/the bruisers)
andrew wk

i'd include springsteen, but i've never seen him with the e street band.

Umm good question. :)

Well, the only two really important ones I'd say would be:

1. Must actually be a frontman, so a member of a larger band. Meaning Elvis doesn't count. ;) And the Beatles didn't really have a frontman, as Paul, John and George often traded lead vocal duties between them.

2. You wouldn't necessarily have to have seen him/her live, as it would be impossible for me to have seen Freddy Mercury, but I'd say the band should have a strong live or video performance presence. I feel a great frontman is as much a visual/pysical performer as he/she is a vocal/instrumental performer.

in no particular order - and no, i haven't seen most of these in person
bono
freddie mercury
robert plant
eddie vedder
mick jagger

my honorable mention is actually a dishonorable mention:
gg. allin - i mean, the guy ate his own feces and stuck his mic up his own ass. i can't think of a dude who worked harder to be the best!

Robert Plant and Eddie Veddar were both two guys that I wanted on my own list but couldn't quite fit. :)

My list, in no paricular order:

Bono
Bon Scott
Robert Plant
Freddie Mercury
Roger Daltrey

well, these are my favorite all-time front, obviously based on my own musical taste....

Bono
Liam Gallagher/Noel Gallagher (hey, he sings some songs also)
John Lennon
Julian Casablancas
Fran Healy
Richard Ashcroft
Ian Brown

i know there's more, but i can't think right now...

:eyebrow: footie band?

Not in order...

Bono
Freddie Mercury
Mick Jagger
Jon Bon Jovi

there's no 5th...

Honorable Mention: Bruce Dickinson, Paul Stanley (Kiss)

BTW: WindmillLane...you forgot Chris Martin

The two times I saw him he was with the E Street band and he could easily top Bono in my list, who I've seen 14 times. :reject: With U2, it's a combination of the four of them as a whole that makes it great for me. Not that the E Street back is some backup band, but Bruce is a crazy frontman.

Technically he did have a backing band. Also I think later frontmen owe him big.

First of all, I think only the frontmen that really standout from the rest of the band even qualify!

My list would be

Jim Morrisson
Robert Plant
Bono
Steven Tyler
Bruce 'air raid siren' Dickinson

See... all these people have unmistakable lead singer qualities that really come out in concert. From what I've seen of Pink Floyd live, I don't think Gilmour even qualifies! And neither does John Lennon at least from what I've seen of The Beatles live, the early to mid 60s I guess. Sure, he was a hugely influential figure but Lennon doesn't seem to me like a standout frontman on stage.
