i'd include springsteen, but i've never seen him with the e street band.

The two times I saw him he was with the E Street band and he could easily top Bono in my list, who I've seen 14 times. With U2, it's a combination of the four of them as a whole that makes it great for me. Not that the E Street back is some backup band, but Bruce is a crazy frontman.

Technically he did have a backing band. Also I think later frontmen owe him big.

First of all, I think only the frontmen that really standout from the rest of the band even qualify!

My list would be

Jim Morrisson
Robert Plant
Steven Tyler
Bruce 'air raid siren' Dickinson

See... all these people have unmistakable lead singer qualities that really come out in concert. From what I've seen of Pink Floyd live, I don't think Gilmour even qualifies! And neither does John Lennon at least from what I've seen of The Beatles live, the early to mid 60s I guess. Sure, he was a hugely influential figure but Lennon doesn't seem to me like a standout frontman on stage.

1. Bono
2. Billie Joe Armstrong
3. Freddy Mercury
4. Johnny Rotten
5. Kurt Cobain

I'm not a bog fan of Queen but I do think that Mercury was a MARVELLOUS frontman.
