Top 20 albums of the decade so far?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Like an earlier poster said, I get your drift about not limiting oneself to the mainstream, but you're way too aggressive with the way you make your point. If you want to expose someone to what's out there, this is the worst possible way to do it.

Also, I think there's a lot of people who HAVE heard many of the albums on your list, just don't have the same passion for those records you do. You may be mistaking indifference for ignorance. People simply have different tastes, and by definition the majority have tastes that are rather mainstream. We're on a U2 message board for Chrissake. What were you expecting?

Well said. I've listened to over half of Macphisto's list, and even have a bunch of choices that are the same. That being said, I think a lot of the albums on his list are merely good/average, and would never consider putting them in a top album of the decade list.

I've listened to a lot of new "indie" music over the past couple years, and a lot of it is as great as Macphisto is saying. However, I would never say it's better than the classic era of the 60s/70s (Especially since it was the classics that influenced these new bands anyways), and I wouldn't chastise people who lean towards more mainstream stuff because you just come off as pretentious.

Easily the greatest decade in the history of popular music. :tsk:

Greater than the 60s, when the Beatles and the Stones and Dylan and early Led Zep and early Doors and the Beach Boys and Simon & Garfunkel and Jimi Hendrix, etc etc, were competing?

Greaeter than the 70s, when Led Zep was in their prime, when Floyd was in their prime, when the Who was in their prime, when Aerosmith was putting out much of it's best albeit early material, when David Bowie was in his prime, when Queen was in its prime, when Billy Joel was in his prime, when Elton John was in his prime, when female singer-songwriters like Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon were paving the way for women like Tori Amos and Fiona Apple decades later, when Abba was putting out some of the most beautifully-crafted pure pop music that's ever been put out, etc etc?

Greater than the 80s when U2 was putting out their early work, when REM was making their name, when Sting&The Police were around, when Metallica put out some of the greatest metal records of all time, when Michael Jackson and Madonna changed the pop world forever, when the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy and Dre and Run DMC revolutionized hip-hop, when GNR burst on the scene, when Depeche Mode was making its name, when the Cure was in their prime, etc?

Greater than the 90s when Radiohead was putting out the Bends and OKC, when U2 was putting out the boldest work of their career, when Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains among others spearheaded the grunge movement, when alternative acts like Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, RATM, etc were competing, when Tupac and Wutang and the Fugees and Jay-Z were making hip-hop mainstream, when Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple were competing, when REM was in their prime, when RHCP was putting out BSSM and Californication, etc etc?

Not better than any one of the above, but better than all of them?

Really?

Your statement is hyperbolic if any statement ever was. I'm not saying there isn't good music this decade. That's ridiculous, of course there is - Radiohead, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Sigur Ros, Eminem, Audioslave, Killers, Franz Ferdinand, older acts like Pearl Jam, RHCP, REM, U2, Tori Amos, Green Day, Springsteen still going at it - there's plenty of good music this decade, when it's just silly, imo, to say that it's the greatest decade in the history of popular music.

And I'm not 40. I'm 23.

Damn! I'm pretty sure you can get banned for bitch slapping a poster like this. Logic is a real sonofabitch.

I guess I'll play along, but U2 doesn't deserve to be in any top 20 lists for this decade.

1. Radiohead - In Rainbows
2. Beck - The Information
3. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
4. Radiohead - Kid A
5. Coldplay - A Rush of Blood
6. Outkast - Stankonia
7. Robert Plant/Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
8. Dixie Chicks - Taking the Long Way
9. Arcade Fire - Funeral
10. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
11. Metric - Old World Underground
12. Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism
13. Bob Dylan - Love and Theft
14. Beck - Sea Change
15. Snow Patrol - Final Straw
16. Paul McCartney - Chaos and Creation
17. PJ Harvey - Stories...
18. The White Stripes - Elephant
19. Doves - Lost Souls
20. Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I will Beat Your Ass

Twenty is actually a pretty small number though. That's only about two albums from each year. Then again, from looking at some of your lists, I can tell you aren't really up-to-date with modern music. Anyway, I'll make mine a Top 50-ish, one max. per artist.

Good editing is key to making a great album. And that also applies to making a great list. It requires effort and some tough choices, but it pays off. So get your nose out of Pitchfork's ass and list the 20 albums of this decade you realy, REALLY like.

Here's my list, ordered by year. I started with a shortlist of about 40 albums (even then still 1 album per artist) and these 20 are my top picks for the moment.

2000:
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
Emmylou Harris - Red Dirt Girl
Tröckener Kecks - >TK
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind

2001:
Johan - Pergola

2002:
Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Elvis Costello - When I Was Cruel

2003:
The Dresden Dolls - The Dresden Dolls
Joss Stone - The Soul Sessions

2004:
Thé Lau - De God Van Nederland
Prince - Musicology
Jasper Steverlinck - Songs Of Innocense

2005:
Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better

2006:
The Frames - The Cost
Razorlight - Razorlight
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black

2008:
Voicst - A Tale Of Two Devils

Interestingly, no album from 2007. And yes, I already included one released this year (in January). I'm still spinning that one very often, even after dozens and dozens of plays in the past months. Still on course for album of the year for me.

:)

This shit is fucking hard, man. I wish that I wasn't so obsessive about this kind of stuff...as it is, I couldn't make myself stop before #37, and I wasn't able to continue on, past it. So, I guess that these are my top 37 records of the decade, so far, until I get the willpower to rank any more.

I wish that I'd been up in this thread a bit earlier, so as to have been able to take in the drama in real time. Sigh. One snoozes and he or she looses, I suppose. Anyway, I've done my best, but I will have forgotten something. BigMac is 900% right in saying that there is so much outstanding music coming out, thanks to the distribution channels opened up by the internet, right now, that it's nearly impossible to keep up. I'm not at all ready to anoint this decade the greatest in modern music, but we definitely have more good music, on the whole, than any other decade of which I can think. I'm not at all sure that that much good music is enough to eclipse all the sometimes superhumanly great music of certain decades past, but time will tell. So, yeah...

Yeah, I'm pretty much indifferent to everything they've done after Agaetis Byrjun, That album was amazing though, I was disappointed to find out it came a year too early for this list.

Haha, my feelings exactly! I was almost going to put in a equest to extend the definition of "decade" just to be able to include AB...if so, it'd be my album of the decade, no question, really. The first time I heard Svegn-g-englar, it was like stepping into a portal into another dimension. "Von"(the album) is also incredible.

...And I fucking forgot about Mclusky Do Dallas. Fucking fuck! Toss it into my list somewhere in the area of 23-25, make it a top 38, and that'll more or less be that. Sigh.

See, I love the "meh." : drool: It's about the contrast of personal and political for me...from Love Boat Captain to Bu$hleaguer, I think the album marks an important marker in their career. Along with that, it creates a sense of place when you listen from start to finish. I'd always end up walking somewhere close to the harbour here when listening. Even the 'throwaway' songs like Arc and You Are reminded me of the sea, or even the world in the bigger context following 9/11...the ocean of madness we all wade through to find a piece of ourselves. It's also a little more eclectic than the last album, a little weirder. The last one did amazingly well, but I sometimes think that "back to form" in media circles is code for playing it safe...or safer.

I get what you are saying. I really do. In fact I remember when 2006' Pearl Jam came out, I still preferred Riot Act because of such excellent songs like I Am Mine, LBC, Save You, Can't Keep etc. But soon the self titled record started growing on me and I couldn't get enough of it! But the best songs on Riot Act are really really good and may even top the self titled album depending on my mood. But I can't even remember the last time I listened to Arc or All Or None.

Love boat captain
Take the reigns,.. steer us towards the clear.
I know it's already been sung,... can't be said enough.
Love is all you need,.. all you need is love,..
Love,.. love,...

You just proved that you've listened to practically nothing this decade outside of the mainstream. If RHCP, Pearl Jam, REM, Torio Amos, Green Day and Springsteen are some of the best acts from this decade (along with Coldplay, Audioslave and the fucking Killers) then you don't know shit. Your listing of artists from the other decades was also predictable and, of course, fails to mention nearly every great underground act of the 70s/80s/90s.

Go download some of the albums off my list and come back to me.

What elitist bullshit is this??? Geez!

We're on a U2 message board for Chrissake. What were you expecting?

This needs to be quoted again and again and again...

Honestly, sometimes I'm amazed that some people here have the tastes they do considering it's a message board for the most fucking mainstream band on the planet!

Not that this matters, at all, but some of us started listening to U2 WAY before they were mainstream, and just stuck with them. Again, not really pertinent, but still wanted to point it out.

Also, when in the fuck will it sink into the heads of some people that taste is subjective. People like what they fucking like....they're not wrong or right about it.

I've listened to a ton of new music this decade, despite my old age, and will continue to do so. I prevail upon music lovers like U2popmofo, If you shout, Lazarus and many others...some of the stuff they recommend is great to my ears....some of it not so much, but I keep questing. I think I've been exposed to more good music these last few years than in a long time....but I've not been exposed to a lot of amazing music. But that's just me and my take on it. If others think this is a seminal decade for music, that's great....keep sharing with us the bands that move you. But please do not try to convince me that you are correct. There is no correct.

Those who have not got Interpol's Turn On The Bright Lights in their top 20, do yerself a favour and go and have a listen and I can assure you that your list will change within a week......yer mind shall be blown.

I did not make a Top 20, but, I have that album and while I like it a lot, my mind was not blown.

Listless could have double meaning, as it turns out. Well done. I guess I should make a list, though, it will not be 20, it might be 17 or 24. And, someone will attack my tastes or whatever, so, fuck off in advance. :)

I didn't have the Interpol albums on my Ipod for some reason and confused that album with Antics. That's the one I meant to list. I always adore it when I listen to it but forget about it immediately after. Deserving of listage in everyone's Top 100 of the decade at least. Not really sure what a U2 fan would find to object to with it.

And for crying out loud, I was not implying that taste isn't subjective. I was implying that some people here have pretty uninformed ears and haven't listened to a lot of modern music. Any list without anything indie isn't a coincidence and the user didn't like any of it. They obviously haven't listened to it.

Also, there is the factor of broadening your horizons. Practically everyone starts out really liking a sort of meat-and-potatoes rock band and expands from there. The more acts you listen to, the more you'll like and the more flavors you'll grow to like. Hell, Interpol (coming back to them) is one of about a half dozen artists I heard and went "hmph"....hundreds of other albums later, they make me wet.

I dunno. I just find it incredibly insulting that people would list a hardly innovative Springsteen record like The Rising as one of the decade's best. That's like saying the current crop is so watered down and icky that someone in their decline phase is better than most of it.

I wasn't commenting on your point, I was judging your personality.

You've been found ... wanting.

What did you think I was responding to? I gave you my reason why I lashed out like I did and received a comment on my personality. It had to be done. It's the same shit film critics get, being called "an elitist douchebag" by many...that's complete bollocks to say the least. Film critics have seen thousands of movie and your average filmgoer sees a half-dozen in theatres per year, most of them action fueled blockbusters. And then the masses complain when one of the one movies they saw had mediocre reviews or when the Oscars nominate "movies I've never heard of"...when it comes to music, it's the same thing. I get called an elitist for having liked, say, The Stars. But the truth is, I am more knowledgeable than most of you because I have heard way more. Two reasons, one - those that hear more have a wider pool to sift from rather than some of the lists of users here who I doubt have heard anywhere close to even a hundred albums this decade. Secondly, hearing more means you know more about quality and have higher standards. If you listen to six albums a year, you'll hold the ones you liked in pretty high contention similar to a six year old liking every movie they see. In all honesty, the thread title alone steered most of the Interference users away from it as I can attest from other posts that 90% of the people here really don't know anything about modern music aside from whatever's on the radio, has a U2 connection (see Arcade Fire) or is connected to another mainstream act with critical credibility (i.e. Radiohead fans hearing Yorke rave about Sigur Ros).

Anyway, quit saying I'm trying to be a taste maker or judging the opinions of others. I'm not. I'm just arguing that a lot of people making lists hardly have the same background as some of the others here. This in turn personally irks me when the music of people my age is continually trashed because the posters here equate the rock of the 00's with Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Nickelback or Daughtry.

Oh, and IMNSHO, Sigur Ros has been in decline since Aegetis Byrjun. There, I said it!!

I agree with this sentiment but it wasn't exactly a roll down the mountain () was another fantastic album, a classic of lesser scale. Takk was a pretty good album and so is the new one.

But how do you know you've heard more? Because people's lists do not resemble yours? And, that means your point is, if they just would listen to what you listen to, they'd like what you like. Brother, I looked at your list and believe it or not, I've listened to most of it, and, sorry, would not place some of it in my Top 20. That's just how it is. I'm not calling you an elitist, I'm calling you ridiculous. Nobody in here is criticizing the musical tastes of people your age, if anything, you're calling out people older than you. Also, if people like The Rising, if it struck a chord with them because it dealt with 9/11, who the fuck are you to question that?

Huh? Hate to be tangential to the firestorm, but who the fuzz is Daughtry? I don't live in an English-speaking country, and even when I did, I didn't listen to the radio for more than 90 seconds, from 2002 and on. And I didn't have cable, either. I've never had access to anything even vaguely MTV-esque. Fill a brother in, son/daughter.
