4. The Police
5. Queen
6. INXS
7. Simple Minds
8. The Smiths
9. Frankie goes to Hollywood

I didn't put REM, cause it was almost unknown here in Europe before 1991 and Losing my Religion..... but it is of course in the 90's Top 10 bands!

Bands not mentioned yet that should be considered
1) Van Halen (2 versions)
2) Judas Priest (You Got Another Thing Coming)
3) Missing Persons (Dale Bozzio was a bit-of-all-right)
4) Lionel Ritchie (if you were born between 82-85 you owe this man your thanks)
5) Bruce Springsteen (only the boss)

1. Echo And The Bunnymen
2. Joy Division
3. Queen
4. The Clash
5. U2
6. Roger Waters
7. Pink Floyd
8. Dire Straits
9. Red Hot Chili Peppers
10. The Police

Probably missing a few. Pink Floyd would have been a hell of a lot higher (number one, actually) if they all had called it quits in 1985. But no. I just couldn't bring myself to list a band that released things like A Momentary Lapse of Reason and Delicate Sound Of Thunder in the number one slot.

I can't believe LMP and I are the only ones who listed Echo And The Bunnymen. :(

Maybe something like this?:

1. U2
2. Pixies
3. The Clash
4. XTC
5. The Police
6. REM
7. The Smiths
8. The Cure
9. Joy Division/New Order
10. Tom Waits

Since I grew up in the 80's, my list is a mix of those I loved and left, and ones that I've come to truly appreciate.

1. U2
2. Duran Duran
3. Inxs
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers
5. Phil Collins
6. Crowded House
7. Genesis
8. Midnight Oil
9. Michael Jackson (I had a life-size poster on my wall ) :shh:
10. Bryan Adams
10.5 Echo & The Bunnymen

Edit: I completely forgot about R.E.M.! They can take Michael's spot.

So there.

Don't shoot me, but I got bored of their music somewhat quickly. It didn't have much staying power for me.

Well, I suppose it's different for everyone. I'm a bit tired of Crocodiles and Porcupine, but I don't think I could ever get tired of Heaven Up Here and Ocean Rain. The Killing Moon -> Seven Seas -> My Kingdom -> Ocean Rain...what a fantastic series of songs to close out an album. Ocean Rain (the song) is just so beautiful. I think that build-up at the end is as good as any classic U2 build-up!

I don't know how I'd rank them, but here they are...

R.E.M.
U2
Depeche Mode
The Cure
The Smiths
The Jesus & Mary Chain
Echo & The Bunnymen
Talking Heads
Crowded House
Joy Division

Based on '80s output only:

1. U2
2. R.E.M.
3. Prince
4. Bruce Springsteen
5. The Police
6. The Smiths
7. The Pretenders
8. Talking Heads
9. Elvis Costello
10. Midnight Oil

Honorable mention: INXS, Kate Bush, The Clash (would have made the list, but London Calling came out in 1979), Peter Gabriel, Crowded House, Splitz Enz, the Eurythmics and the Replacements.

The '80s are so underrated musically.
