Tom Waits appreciation thread...

When I started listening awhile ago, it took me a while to get used to his voice...but now it's warm and familiar, and Waits is one of my favorite artists.

Who else?

edit: and 'rain dogs' was my first and favorite...

I've been a Tom Waits fan for awhile and I think it is worth noting that he has recently released two new albums, Alice and Blood Money. I have heard several tracks and live interviews on the radio and I like what I hear. There is definitely a twisted circus-type feeling to his music. His voice is an aquired taste but I quite like it.

Tom Waits - Alice (Anti)
One of two simultaneously released albums from Tom Waits, Alice is comprised of songs originally written in 1992 for an avant-garde opera but not recorded until now. The mix of smoky jazz ballads, off-kilter cabaret, and weird circus tunes conjures a dreamlike atmosphere laced with a heavy undercurrent of melancholy. A fascinating trip through the
looking glass.-Don Yates

Tom Waits - Blood Money (Anti)
The second of two simultaneously released albums from Tom Waits is an unsettling work of spooky, doom-laden and seriously twisted cabaret music. The harsh, clanking rhythms of Waits's '90s albums show up on a few songs, but it's the foreboding and yet utterly attractive melodies that stand out the most here - imagine Tin Pan Alley if it was located in Hell.-Don Yates

I like him as well, but I agree - at first his voice definitely takes getting used to...

I slowed down my journey to town the other day, because Alice came on the radio, it'sonly time I've heard it. "..arithmetic, arithmetoc..." A story-teller, I like that. My bro-in-law is a big fan, I just have Cohen/Waits type moods, but don't lsiten to them regularly.

There is a guy in Sydney at the moment doing a show called "Tom Waits For No Man" I'd love to see/hear that.
