Oh I'm sure you'll make friends!

I was working full-time up there and all my colleagues (pretty much) were married with kids and never went out much. So it kinda sucked. I did have a few drinking buddies though. Plus I had a girlfriend down in Jersey so I had no reason to go out. (well... for picking up girls at least, lol)

But you're in a university setting. It should be fun!

Yeah, I like to just throw stuff together and see what I come up with. That's how I ended up using Worcestershire sauce all the time. It was sitting around getting no use, so I thought "hey, this might add something to my bolognese sauce!" Now it ends up in just about anything that I cook in a pot ...

MSG??? MSG is a thousand miles away from Buffalo!

That's one of the things I did not like about living up there. NYC was too far!

Mexican food I tried in Chicago:
Fruit cocktail = (basically, bag of assorted fresh fruit pieces, with lime juice and salt (which amazingly works)... no chilli for this gringo)

Cactus =

Cactus fruit = (I don't know why we didn't just EAT all the prickly pear that invaded the country... that stuff tastes GOOD)

Quesadillas =

Some sort of tamale things =

Evil super-hot innocent-looking carrot of DOOM = (I am sure no human being has ever turned redder than I did)

Psh. It's a marriage of two good food cultures.

You haven't seen me sunburnt then!

And ... cactus?! The spiky nasty desert plants?

Yeah I'm sure there will be ways to get there! It'll just take a few hours, lol. Anyway, since you're in a university setting, it'll be easier to plan things out. I was doing 50 plus hours a week like a slave so it was hard for me to do long distance trips.

lime and salt are my fav "seasons" to add to food. it is so basic yet it doesn't take away from the food's natural flavor.

I'm still amazed by that. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but I am. I lived in Queensland with its "everything's shut by midnight!" mentality for too long.
