 Oh, thanks - I can assure you, I'm not always talking about ancient civilisations and stuff, maybe after a few drinks or if I'm riled up or if someone asks, or if I'm bored... that's all.

I'm sure Ali can recall plenty of incidents of me in regular conversation suddenly just whipping out my camera to photograph passing trams ...

There's a good reason I carry my camera at all times!

As for the Corinthian, I agree that pattern is a little gaudy, but there were many different ones used. Checker patterns like that were common, probably sometimes even painted right onto the helmet itself - but you also had the standard Greek zig-zags and squarey things and other designs I don't really know the names of. That particular crest would probably be elongated a bit more, and was worn by Spartan officers, presumably. The king, like Leonidas (who was actually about 60 when he fought at Thermopylai - not exactly Gerard Butler and probably with no Scottish accent) would have an even larger crest. There were quite a few interesting crests and helmets, people are still learning things about them and coming up with theories today.

That helmet, by the way, is made at an armoury in Melbourne. It's considered one of the best reproduction armouries in the world today, I think I'll have a visit when I go over.

Ah, right. I take it the patterns actually served some symbolic purpose? Like to identify rank or a particular regional origin?

And Melbourne for the win again, eh?

That sounds like a good plan, any 80s U2 poster would be pretty good, I imagine. A Big Star store here once had a pretty good array of U2 posters seemingly from the late eighties, but I didn't buy any. I feel like a tool now cause that was like four years ago and I wouldn't mind having one of them up, even though I'm usually against having posters up in my room unless they're old propaganda posters or art prints.

I don't normally have anything on my walls. At the moment, all that's up in my place is my One Tree Hill single and a comic I liked, this one: http://www.qwantz.com/archive/001104.html

But I'm willing to make an exception to that if I find a cool eighties U2 poster or something Porcupine Tree-related.

There are some pretty good U2 posters on ebay.

They are all hard to look at in their own unique ways.

I just got tired... I think I'll go now and try to get 8 hours sleep. I've decided that 7 hours is exactly the wrong number of hours I can sleep... 8 is great, I'm fine with 6... but 7 just leaves me out of sorts and cranky all day.

Seeya dudes

Six hours of sleep and then a Porcupine Tree gig in Sydney somehow worked for me on the weekend ... madness, though.

G'night, Ali!

Ancient civilisations > trams

Trams make Melbourne more liveable. Ancient civilisations just give you something cool to see at the museum. You should support the trams. :tsk:

Oh, night Ali - been nice talking to you! I'll give you the details of the armoury sometime, if you want.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing that's becoming more accepted. At first it was just like thinking they put whatever design they wanted on their armour, but now the understanding is that it was related to heritage, for example a soldier of Dorian heritage would likely paint triangles around the rim of his shields. The actual emblems on the shields are more interesting - there are hundreds of examples in vase paintings alone, and I've talked to a few Greek guys that have been dedicating much of their time deciphering which emblem belongs to which class, race, unit, area etc.

I love those dinosaur comics. I don't check them all the time, but when I do they make me laugh. And yeah, I'm the same, I'll make exceptions - I don't normally wear band t-shirts, but I have a Husker Du one that I just wore out to death. It looks very punk now, all ripped at the chest and sides. I want another. :(

And Edge is a Mohican.

I'm really fond of the first one in that post, actually - mainly because of the pink strips and unflattering photo.

Yeah, I can see people who DON'T like U2 buying that one.

I don't know how ancient historians do what they do. It really impresses me. It seems so difficult compared to the history I specialise in. To do post-colonisation Kiwi history, you basically just have to be literate!

I'm catching up on Dinosaur Comics at the moment. I don't check it often, but it always makes me laugh, and that particular comic really appealled to me. I doubt anybody's surprised to see such a nerdish comic cellotaped to my lounge door.

I need more band t-shirts. I have 3 U2 ones (of which only one I wear regularly, a JT one) and on Sunday I got a PT shirt with the Aussie tour dates. Some more Porcupine Tree shirts would be good, and maybe some other obscure prog/metal bands ...

Yeah, you're right.

So, which one of us is going to buy it?

You. I don't like pink.

If it were yellow, you'd have a fight on your hands.

Come on, people, we're less than 60 posts off a new thread. Don't make me show off more of my photography.

Pink and yellow are both ugly as sin. Pink is a little sillier though, so sure, I'll be picking it up in a jiffy.

Yeah, the dedication with ancient history and archaeology is really astounding. I keep on wondering when I should take a course in ancient Greek, if I should do it when I'm much older, or just part time during Tafe or something. Once you've got that, everything is awesome because you don't have to rely on shaky and sometimes biased English translations.

I'm not great with dates, though, and since there aren't so many exact dates of note in ancient history, I feel more suited to it than modern.

Not surprised at all, but at least the comic is funny - most comics on the internet are horrible, Dinosaur comics is one of the few good ones!

Gotta say, if I saw some good shoegaze band shirts, I'd definitely buy them.

I've never owned any U2 shirts, but I have this long stripped jacket that Bono definitely would have worn in about 1988. I expect everyone to think the same way about it, so it counts as U2 merchandise to me.

 Yellow's the best colour there is. Though admittedly it would look almost as stupid as pink in the context of that poster.

But the Chennai Super Kings' yellow uniform is awesome, and I'm kind of jealous that Aussie sports teams get yellow. Though black is my second favourite colour and Wellington is yellow and black, so it all works out.

"Bands make so much fun of U2. Ask any band on the bandstand, say U2 and the band starts laughing. Because the drummer can’t play. Bass player plods along. The guitar player, if he didn’t have Brian Eno, he wouldn’t have a guitar sound. It’s basically a Brian Eno guitar sound played by guy who’s got one trick. That’s why there’s no leads, because the guys got nothing in there. And lyrically, I mean, whatever. You like God, you go ahead with that. That melts your butter you go for it."

That's our boy!

Yellow is good on sports uniforms and with other colours, but bare I find it unbearably depressing. So much about it being the 'happy' colour. I'd much rather look at orange, as far as hotter colours go.

I'd actually like to do some Greek too, but it's due to my theological interest. I feel I could even more effectively study and argue New Testament stuff if I could read it in the original language.

I'm good with dates and analysing/synthesising printed documents. I'd be absolutely useless as an ancient historian - mainly due to the vision - but put me in a government archive and I'm in my element.

 When I grow my hair out, does my 'fro count as U2 merch?

My other two U2 shirts are modern ones. One has the HTDAAB cover, and one is of Edge's handprint with some slogan on it. I'm sure you can imagine why I don't wear the HTDAAB one, and the Edge's handprint one doesn't really fit comfortably.

I'm kind of tempted to go looking for band shirts online. My clothing is generally really fucking boring ...

Yeah, orange is pretty good too. And most blues.

The one colour I really can't stand is white. I don't know why the fuck people buy white cars. Who the hell wants to own a white car? Could your car be any more boring?

I was just about to say "hey you take that back, my family owns white cars, man!", but actually both the cars we use regularly are dark green. I do not own a personal car, because I can't afford a Lotus Elise.

Please at least call him out on this one. I'm sure most of us would still be interested in the thread or at least would've kept going with it for longer had he not hijacked it.

My mother's always driven red cars. She thinks they look the best.

I'd drive a yellow or a blue car if I could, you know, drive. Though frankly, living in Melbourne, I don't think I'd bother owning one. I'd just rent one on the occasions I need one.

What in the name of dogg

WTF? I wish I could read more of it than just the top sentence and the Beautiful Day quote.

Oh, did we decide on our next location? Do we want to do Geebung, or elsewhere?

I think I can make it out...

...yeah... I've got it!

It says this:

Geebung sounds good. I was thinking Coca Cola in Panama, Fister in Norway or Saddam Hussein in Sri Lanka. The Mullet island near Ireland is a good one, too.

Hah, those are all good too. Saddam Hussein Town is one I've been meaning to do too. Ian reckons it should be "accidentally" started in FYM!
