Wouldn't it make more sense to expand Wellington Airport so that it can be a PROPER international airport and take some flights off Auckland's hands? I know that wouldn't suit localised interests, but fuck 'em.

Auckland doesn't even have too many flights! And one stop to places like Los Angeles, Vancouver etc and two stops to London isn't unreasonable, is it?

I think the 787 will help international long haul flights out of Wellington, i think it can go a long way off the runway length available there.

And don't forget promising tax cunts so greedy cunts vote for them and then make sure the majority of idiots that voted for them don't see a red (or blue!) cent of those tax cunts.

Then they'll complain when they don't get a doctor fast enough when they break their leg.

It just seems silly to me that the nation's capital is internationally linked to just Australia (and some inconsequential Pacific island nations too?).

What's the deal with 747s at Wellington anyway? I know they HAVE landed there. My father remembers one such occurrence!

You're forgetting that everything is Labour's fault. Never mind that Labour is the party committed to readily accessible public services. When things go wrong, it's never because the Nationals did cuts for cunts and there's now not enough funding; it's because of socialism! Because ... funding public services means they don't work ...

No problem with Australia. You can go most of the way around the world from there too!

I know one United 747 landed there years ago. The original destination, Christchurch, was fogged in so they diverted to Auckland, which was also fogged in...i believe they were getting a bit desperate until one of the pilots saw Wellington airport and they landed there.

They unloaded the passengers and the luggage to get it out of there!

You have to love the New Zealand media......

Especially TV3, who can't decide who they're backing from week to week.

Still. Christchurch has (used to have?) flights to LA, so why the fuck not Wellington? It just seems a bit silly for the nation's capital to have an airport that frankly isn't world class. You'd think there would be demand for flights to places like Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, and the US west coast.

Ah, yes, that sounds like the story my father told me. I believe he actually saw the plane come in. According to him, Ohakea was also fogged in.

Just looked up Wellington Airport on Wikipedia, and it says 747SPs flew out of Wellington 1981-85 as the DC8 fleet had been retired and the DC10 fleet needed a longer runway.

TV3 are fucking useless. My childhood home was in a broadcast shadow so we couldn't get TV3, and frankly it wasn't much of a loss. I think the only show I ever really wanted to see that I couldn't was Transformers.

Whenever I'm in New Zealand, I go to One for news, though it seems to be shittier now than it was a few years ago.

Christchurch seems to draw significant tourist numbers that i don't believe Wellington does (which is shit). I know Christchurch now has a non-stop flight to Singapore, one stop to Dubai and a non-stop flight from Tokyo (largely tour groups). Again, i think the 787 and possibly the A350 will see huge leaps in Wellington airports international use, if the numbers stack up.

If i remember the version of the story i've heard, they only spotted Wellington through a break in the clouds, so they were quite lucky.

And i forgot about the 747SPs, but they hardly count as 747s.

When i actually bother to watch the news i still watch TV3, simply because it follows out of Home and Away
