The problem I have with people criticizing franchises is they've been around forever. Tarzan, Buck Rodgers, any classic horror movie...

It is true that an entire year shouldn't be judged based on 1 or 2 movies alone, but it's cool if you liked them. I did, too.

Rush Hour 3 was the best movie ive ever seen, and I loved so many other movies.

Excuse me while I floss the little chunks of vomit from between my teeth.

^dude you saw it, what did jackie chan EXACTLY say when he said he was half black too, and chris tucker responded you cant be black, theres a height requirement..

He said something like,

Yeah since you are half chinese, im half black, look at me, im fly and i bros with snoop, something like that, and ever since I saw it a few hours ago I keep on trying to look of what he actually said..

I haven't seen this one, but I've seen the two though.

I wasn't criticising franchise films per se, just that a year of film shouldn't be judged on the big name films released in it. I really enjoyed Harry Potter this year and will be seeing The Bourne Ultimatum when it comes out here (thought Ocean's 13 was pants though).

And to save me replying to you in 2 different threads, what's in that big ass, 200 film Netflix queue mofo?

Okay, that makes sense. I really loved Spidey 3, Transformers, Die Hard 4, and Knocked Up this summer.

Here's a sampler of the Epic-Ass 200 Movie NetFlix Queue:

Metropolis
Barton Fink
The Graduate
Notorious
Marathon Man
The Cider House Rules
The Fisher King
Brazil
Heat
Charade
Malcolm X
The Science of Sleep
All the President's Men
Cool Hand Luke
Vertigo
They Live
The French Connection
Serpico
Once Upon a Time in America
Waking Life
Seven Samurai
Miller's Crossing
Punch-Drunk Love
Renaissance (this looks amazing, btw)
Fargo
Touch of Evil
Starman
Broadcast News
Easy Rider
Poltergeist
and Shadow of the Vampire (we all need some more Dafoe.)

Ah, I forgot about Knocked Up, I think we get that in a couple of weeks and I'm keen to see it.

That's a pretty varied list too, it's cool to see some Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock lurking in there. Both of Grant's have two of his most gorgeous co-stars too (Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn) hehe. Overall there's a fair few stone cold classics in there, it'll be interesting to find out your views on them

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to hitting some real classics with the ability to appreciate them.

Expect lots of reviews in the review thread.

So... did last year really stack up, or will this year and '09 top it?

I'm sort of blinded right now by my anticipation of Quantum of Solace and Half-Blood Prince so I don't know a lot about the other good stuff that's to be coming out later this year.

Will someone kindly educate me? I know nothing.

Lance, did your 2-dimensional ratings system ever work out for you?

2007 certainly stacks up still. And the poll choices made me lol seeing them again. Good times.

I don't think this year will be quite as strong as last, but I'm feeling 2009 even more than I was feeling 2007. 2009 shall be the 1999 of this decade. Wrap your mind around that one.

As for my 2D ratings system, my friend and I never truly bothered to iron out the details, as we both just use my latest revised 10 point system. But every now and then we'll bust out the prototype for some healthy discussion of films that call for such a rating technique.

I'm still trying to catch up on seeing the "better films" of '07... hopefully I'll be through in time for this year's fall season.

'09's definitely got a chance at being awesome, with a bunch of the ace directors in the mix, just have to wait and see, I guess.

You still using Flixster at all?

I said in this thread 2002 was the best of the decade but damn 2001 had more classics than any year this decade. It is tough because 2002 had more good movies.

As for 2008, I think I'll end up remembering this year for all the blockbusters that missed for audiences. Cloverfield, Jumper, 10,000 BC, Narnia, The X-Files and others. Also I'll remember the hype and viral marketing so many movies had like Cloverfield, The Happening and The Dark Knight. I can't speak for foreign films this year but this was a drop from last year. The flood of adaptions, remakes and digging up old TV shows is a huge reason for that.

2009 has some things that should be awesome but some things that should never have been made like the MTV remake of Rocky Horror, Land of The Lost, Transformers 2, Star Trek, The Wolf Man, a supposed Hellraiser remake, The A-Team and Jurrasic Park 4. :barf:

What's wrong with Star Trek, Wolf Man, and Land of the Lost?

The new Wes Anderson, Scorsese, Coppola, Mann, Woody, Cameron, Tarantino, Jonze, and Gilliam films, and the motherfucking Watchmen and Arrested Development movies will make up for that. Then you've got a new Sacha Baron Cohen comedy... an entertaining-looking Terminator film... then the usual mess of surprises and it'll be dandy.

28 Days Later
About a Boy
About Schmidt
City of God
The Dancer Upstairs
The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
In America
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Mothman Prophecies
Signs
Spider-Man
Unfaithful
Dark Water
Phone

I don't want to be a jerk, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what's so great about these movies you listed from 2002.

I'm curious which films in particular from 2001 you think make it a better year yourself.

You're a jerk whether you want to be one or not. JERK.

That's true.

Unfortunately it doesn't make that list of films suck any less.

I might as well be a full jerk now that I've already been accused in this thread. How liberating.

Star Trek: I hate the concept of early Kirk and Spock. I don't like casting. I'm really worried about it not having the ideas of Star Trek in mind and being faithful to the universe. Though part of that comes from hearing all the horror stories about the Nemesis director. It might be good but it has such potential to suck.

The Wolf Man: I don't see the point of remaking this film when there are already so many werewolf movies.

Land Of The Lost: I also don't see the point in making stupid remakes of old TV series.

2009 might surprise me but I can't get past the crap when just looking at the next year on paper.

If Star Trek rocks, then everyone's happy... if it tanks, then there's 40 years worth of material to draw back on. It's a win-win situation.

Have you seen who's attached to Wolf Man? Cast-wise and Rick motherfucking Baker-wise?

Land of the Lost looks like a silly vehicle for Will Ferrell, who I'm a fan of. I don't know anything about the old show, but it sounds goofy enough for me.

Everything has the potential to be great "on paper" or suck... look at most of our predictions from the beginning of this thread and how they turned out. We're talking about films none of us have seen yet anyway.

Looking at the 2002 list now they don't all hold up that well.

The great films from 2001:

Foreign films

Amelie
Talk To Her
Sex and Lucia
Fat Girl
Intimacy

US:

Donnie Darko
Fellowship of The Ring

I just hate seeing such an amazing franchise get dragged through the mud. Though it could never be worse than Nemesis. The horror stories about the director are the thing of nightmares.

The Wolf Man with who is involved reminds me of Peter Jackson's King Kong. While it may be a nice update, it isn't really needed.

I just don't know about these kind of remakes. Who knows though.

True. Though it is hard to imagine getting something good out of some of the really bad movie ideas.
