Theatre fans: What does it mean when a show is in previews?

I ask because I have tickets to see After the Fall on Broadway, TONIGHT, and the show is still in previews and I want to make sure I get to see the yummy Peter Krause.

i saw a broadway preview of 'once a upon a mattress' several years ago with sara jessica parker in it. basically it just means it hasn't officially opened yet. it's only shown to a select number of audiences during a preview. when i saw the preview all they had was playbills...they didn't even have the regular programs yet. i guess it's kinda like a dress rehearsal but with an audience.
