PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- All-Star Chris Webber was traded from Sacramento to the Philadelphia 76ers late Wednesday night as part of a stunning six-player deal.

The Sixers sent Brian Skinner, Kenny Thomas and Corliss Williamson to the Kings for Webber, Matt Barnes and Michael Bradley.

The Sixers called a news conference just before midnight. The deal comes one day before the NBA trading deadline.

Sixers president Billy King was looking to make a deal to improve the Sixers frontcourt as they make their playoff push. The Sixers are 26-27 and just a half game behind Boston for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Kings general manager Geoff Petrie had been shopping Webber, who has three years about $62 million left on his contract. The Kings are 34-20 going and are 7 1/2 games behind Phoenix in the Pacific Division.

King insisted he wouldn't part with any of his prized nucleus of young players to make a deal and he didn't have to.

Thomas had fallen out of favor with first-year Sixers coach Jim O'Brien, while Brian Skinner was a free-agent bust. Corliss Williamson was a valuable sixth man off the bench, but none of them have the pedigree of Webber.

The Kings just traded Chris Webber... a guy who's been averaging a triple double per game for the past 3 weeks... for Corliss Williamson and two bums...

WORST...

TRADE...

EVER...

It's risky for sure. They Kings still have Miller, Peja, Bibby, and Cuttino. And the franchise has been looking to trade Webber for a while. I'm just amazed at how little he is worth these days.

I don't like Webber and I like the Kings so I'm happy. But now Peja better start playing some ball and stop complaining about how he wasn't the man.
The X factor- Brian Skinner...:eyebrow:

Iverson, Korver, and Webber will be an interesting team. The Sixers don't have many good roll players though.

And lets face it, this trade may look one sided, but its nowhere near the most one-sided trade in NBA history...let me remind you young'uns of a little trade Red Auerbach made with Golden State back in the early 80's. It was a swap of 1st rounders (If I recall the #1 overall pick to GS for the #3 overall pick) and a no name center.
At any rate the end result was this: Joe Barry Carroll for Robert Parish and Kevin McHale.

i know full well of the deal... it ended up being one sided, but at the time no one questioned it. there are tons of deals like that in NBA lore... the knicks once traded a first round pick to the supersonics for some journeyman center. the sonics then sent that pick to the chicago bulls, who picked some no name D2 player named Scottie Pippen. Robert "Tractor" Traylor was traded on draft day for Dirk Nowitzki. In 1997 the Vancouver Grizzlies traded a future #1 pick to the Pistons for Oits Thorpe. The Pistons then used that pick to draft... Darko Milicic. OK bad example... but when you factor in that the Grizzlies could have used that pick to take Carmello Anthony, then yea... that's pretty one sided, also.
but as far as straight up, what you see is what you get deals... this is as bad as it gets.

you make a trade for one of three reasons.

1. to improve your team
2. to get younger
3. to get cap space

this trade made the kings worse... the three stiffs they got back have all been in the league long enough where it's fair to say that there won't be any remarkable improvement from any of them... so they didn't get younger... and all three guys they got still have at least 3 years on their deals... so they got no cap room.

it just makes zero sense.

Perhaps the Kings have some other contingency deal in place for today to move some of the new meat along elsewhere?

I would have thought it was a cap space maneuver, but if they all have 3 yrs left then it makes little sense. Of course Webber may blow his knee out again by St Patty's day and the Kings may look like geniuses.

glenn big dog robinson, who isn't playing, is on the 76ers roster... and his contract expires end of season. if the kings had gotten him, then i get it... the i understand. but not only did they not get robinson, but now the 76ers can go spin robinson off for someone else... perhaps to minnesota for sprewell, which was rumored last week. philly is in a GREAT spot right now.

philly spun big dog robinson off to new orleans for mashburn and rodney rogers.

see... now this is good, top quality general managing by both teams. the hornets get an expiring contract that will give them more flexability in the free agent market come the off-season... philly gets a servicable backup 4 in rogers, and mashburn as a throw in, who has 2 years left on his deal but is 99.9% sure to be retiring... thus the contract will come off the cap.

jiri welsch to the cavs for a 2007 #1... good move... by 2007, as long as lebron resigns, a first rounder from the cavs is assured to be a late one.

When I saw this trade, I started laughing at how stupid Sac had to be to pull it. What the??? Webber is still a great player (should have been an all-star) and despite his injury past, he is good for a double double every night.

I think it will work with two superstars on the team, Webber is unselfish and Iverson wants to win. Webber is a good passer too, when he gets doubled hit an open Korver, that man can shoot.

Great trade for Philly, the Maloofs were partying too much at their Casino in vegas the night before....

webber is worthless, he has no heart, he doesnt battle, watch him in the post, he never boxes out, he needs to work harder.

Well, well. Being from Sacramento and a Kings fan, am I surprise? NOT AT ALL. Trading Webber talks have been on going for a long time now.

You may say Sacramento is "STUPID" for trading Webber but I think theres way more here than what is being said.Geoff Petrie is known for making good trades, so why did he do this trad that obviously does not favor Sacramento? Sure, Webber is making a lot money 3rd highest salary in the NBA. Maybe Sacramento wanted some breathing room? Maybe.

Here's what I think happened.

I think it came down to either keeping WEBBER or PEJA. Sure both said that whatever happened between them during the off season was "OK" now. But was it really? PEJA made it VERY CLEAR to Geoff and the Kings that he wanted to be traded. Some how they convinced him to stay. Maybe Peja and Webber just never made amends. PEJA has an option to stay after the 2005/6 season. Maybe Geoff felt pressured by PEJA to get rid of Webber or he will be going! I doubt the Kings want to get rid of PEJA. They want PEJA. So maybe Geoff felt that in order to keep Peja he had to sacrifice Webber.

Before the incident with Webber and Peja happened. Geoff Petrie made it very clear that he will ONLY trade Webber for an equal Super-star athlete. So what is up with this trade then? No Super star is coming to Sacramento, yet Webber is Gone.

And Calvin LAKERS SUCK!!!

And what is up with Antoine Walker going back to the Celtics? Strangest trade of the day...

I dunno, maybe the Celtics saw something that convinced them that this time around he'll want to be a great power forward instead of a crappy outside shooter.

Hey Hey Hey! Well look at who decided to come out of the barn to take a break from milking cows. well well well... I guess you DO have a tv in there. All this time I thought you were just having fun with that cow bell I gave you a parting gift after we crushed your heart in the western conference finals. Ah yes, I do miss our fights

Why are kings fans always in denial? :tsk:

The differnce now is that before last year Toine was definitely going to demand a max contract when his deal was up (end of this season), but now reality has set in that he isn't gonna command max dollars, so the Celts may re-sign him for a reasonable contract or they'll let him go and have the available cap space.

i should never have insulted geoff pietre and the sacramento kings for trading webber for nothing...

... how quick i forget that the GM of my favorite team is isiah thomas. :banghead:

No kidding. I guess the plan for the Knicks is to have a bloated payroll that will be in fierce contention for the 8th playoff spot every year for the rest of the decade.

Do you include improving team chemistry in #1? I'm not a big NBA follower, but my percption was that the King's lack of chemistry was at least part of this deal.

Sort of similar to Randy Moss getting shipped out of Minnesota -- I actually think the Vikes will be better off without him.

you're missing something... the randy moss trade improved team chemistry... yes. but this trade accomplished two of the three goals for a trade... the vikings got younger and got more cap room. and if they use that cap room for plaxico burress, and then add to their defense with the extra draft picks... then yea... they got better, too.

the kings may have improved chemistry... arguably. but they didn't get younger, they didn't improve their team and they didn't help their cap number.
