the verve

after hearing the ashcroft/coldplay bitter sweet symphony, i decided to download urban hymns. im listening to it for the first time as i type and im thinking i love this bands sound. i even skipped over bss. this is a great band and im so glad i chose to sample them. i have a feeling ill be hitting replay on this one.

btw, is this band still around??? or is it just richard ashcroft now?

it's just richard ashcroft, who has released 2 solo albums. Some people think they suck; they certainly don't have the power of The Verve's stuff but it's more in a soul direction and isn't bad. He cowrote and performed with Brian Wilson on his most recent album.

Urban Hymns is a modern classic. Give that thing a few more listens and you'll see they put the sleep-inducing Coldplay to absolute shame. Ashcroft is one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years, and musically they are so far ahead it's not worth discussing. Live they were sure something to behold. The closest I've seen a band come to combining arena rock with the intimate soulful connection to the audience since U2. It was like gospel.

yeah i agree with the coldplay thing, although coldplay could become something great, i think everyone loves the potential more than the music.

as for the verve, it sucks they broke up. can you fill me in on what happened to them that caused a break up of what is obviously something special? its a damned shame if you ask me.

Urban Hymns is a masterpiece; one of my favorite albums ever.

As for Rick's solo stuff, his first one is a bit tedious, but Human Conditions is wonderful.

The best Verve records were "A Northern Soul" and " A Storm In Heaven."

New Decade
Blue
The Sun The Sea
Starsail
This Is Music
So It Goes
Slide Away

This is the shit that made me really want to explore the guitar.

And if you haven't heard their first single from 1992:

see ithink the guitar is what interests me, so ashcroft wouldnt be as appealing to me without it. but ashcroft is fucking great nonetheless.

The Verve rule. Nick McCabe = guitar god.

And I do like bits of the first Rich album, bombastically overproduced it may be. 'A Song For The Lovers' is wonderful, as is 'C'mon People'.

I will always love Richard Ashcroft for inspiring Noel Gallagher to write "Cast No Shadow" in his honor.

I saw him play a three-song acoustic set as an opening act for Oasis in 1996. I feel very happy that I was there--he was great. And it was so terrific to see him with Coldplay at Live8.

I heard Bittersweet Symphony on the radio about 2 years ago and went immediately to buy Urban Hymns...

Chris Martin was right when he said that it's probably the "greatest song ever written"
