The title for the next James Bond is...

I never said I disliked Brosnan, or those movies.

I'll say it. Before Casino Royale there hadn't been an actual VERY GOOD Bond film since For Your Eyes Only. They became increasingly generic action films until the reboot.

Brosnan would have done a lot better had he taken the role when they originally considered him. Personally I thought he was better in The Tailor of Panama than anything he did as Bond.

There two weeks into filming apparently, with a release due in November. Apparently the movie picks up two hours after Casino Royale finished, which did kick ass. He's an awesome Bond.

However I agree with lazarus, that'll be a working title. It's shithouse.

Fuck Connery, he has no more range then Moore, yet is overrated as some kind of god. He's a chauvenistic wife beater who's also a sellout, and an undeserving Oscar winner to boot.

So who's the best Bond?

As someone who grew up with Moore's Bond and liked Brosnan (hey, Goldeneye was a good start but later movies got weaker), and at the risk of Connery supporters backlash, I'll go with Craig. I feel like he's the best actor out of all the Bonds so far. He is convincing in action scenes, he gets the emotions down plus in the Vesper/train scenes he can flirt-act too.

It seems all actors either go the route of "charmer Bond" (Moore, Brosnan, Lazenby) or the "tough Bond" (Connery, Dalton, Craig).

Craig was awesome, there was no cheesiness in Casino Royale.

Another vote for Connery here, I just think he embodied the role in a way that nobody else has quite managed to. He nailed everything, the charisma, the wit, the romance, the violence, you really did believe in him. Plus he had the good fortune to be Bond right at the very beginning when they making some of the very best films of the whole canon. I still rate From Russia With Love as the all-time greatest Bond film.

Also, not that I have anything against them, but the Bond movies have always struck me as quite average. Usually enjoyable romps, certainly - but nothing special.

Is this what everybody thinks? I can never tell.

Yes, but a good amount of novels have been written by other authors after Fleming died. John Gardner wrote between 10-15 of them through the 80's and 90's, though as far as I know none of them were made into films.

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with them remaking one of the classic Bonds, as many of them were altered almost beyond recognition during adaptation. Perhaps a more literary approach to one of Fleming's better novels would be better than some random screenplay with no history.

Casino Royale is a slight step in that direction, although the first filmed version was a parody and can't really be considered a true version of the story.

I should add that there are several Bond short stories that have not been adapted yet, and as Lance pointed out earlier, Quantum of Solace is one of the titles. Whether the plot of the new film has anything to do with the original story is unknown at this point, but it doesn't sound like it.

The Spy Who Loved Me, for example, has nothing to do with the Fleming novel of the same name, and the short story The Living Daylights only provides the first act of that film. For Your Eyes Only and A View to a Kill also only lent their names as titles.

I'm fairly certain that Gardner wrote Goldeneye, Brosnan's first Bond film and best IMO. I never really enjoyed any of the other three he made, although they had their moments, and I think he deserved to go out on something better than Die Another Day.

I've always been a big fan of Moore's work as Bond. I mean, I can't say he's a favorite for sure, as I really enjoyed Connery and Brosnan as well.

If this next film follows suit though, I'm fairly sure Craig will go down as my personal favorite. He's soooo the fucking man.

And in my third posting, I'd like to give a shout out to the underappreciated George Lazenby, who I think made a good go of the role, and was in what may be one of the 3-4 best Bond films, On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Daniel Craig wins for me pretty much by default - his Bond is the only one I actually found myself giving a damn about. I'd say that Sean Connery's Bond is iconic in the way that no other actor's is, but he never did much for me as Bond. Roger Moore is just way too sleazy, Pierce Brosnan IMO got better as Bond the longer he had the role, shame that his Bond films went down the drain after "Goldeneye".

But come on:

Live and Let Die, Moonraker, A View to a Kill, and Octopussy are all pretty terrible - although The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only are both extremely good.

I don't know. I enjoy Connery's films: Dr. No, Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, and Thunderball more than the rest, with Goldfinger being my absolute favorite.

I'm judging too much upon the quality of the film and not the actor's quality of Bond, I guess, but I feel they go hand-in-hand.
