And the Sox still have a 9 game lead after that.

The Yankees are free falling again.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto ends up being the team that tries to make a serious run.

Being on TBS did put them on the map nationally, but they don't truly have anywhere near the following as the other teams I mentioned.

My mother is Cardinals fan. She lived there for a couple years growing up.

I have yet to convert her to being a Phils fan. The idea of rooting for a perrenial loser hasn't struck a chord.

Are we talking about a following, or being recognizable? Because if it's a following, you're right. But if it's recognizability, you're wrong. There's a whole generation of kids who know all about the Braves because they were a dominant franchise throughout their entire childhood. Attendance in Atlanta does not really factor into recognizibility nation-wide. But, yeah, for fan-base and such, Yanks, Sox, Cubs and Cards are the big 4.

The discussion was mostly about popularity, so its more of a following thing.
Braves are probably the 3rd most popular baseball team if you poll the residents of Georgia.
They certainly became much more recognizable when Ted TV bought them, Hanoi Jane hung out in the box seats, they were on your TV 6 nights a week and they became very successful in the 90's.
Still you won't see an awful lot of hats with "A" on them around the country.
You still see "NY", "B" , "C", "StL" and a fair amount of "LA" in areas outside the home city, not so much "A".

Yeah, we disagree on this one. I see a lot of "A" caps and jerseys on people younger than myself. Also, SI or Sporting News or someone did an article on this a few weeks ago, how people 26 and younger and more familiar with the Braves than any other team. I also read a poll conducted by a trade publication that indicated the same thing.

Either way, people in Atlanta sure do take them for granted, and, clearly, for my generation and older, the Braves rank below teams like the Cards or Yanks.

The Cardinals benefitted from being the western most baseball city for a while. Combine that with the powerful KMOX signal that would be broadcast throughout the entire midwest, they were able to pick up quite a large fanbase. KMOX was the radio version of WGN/TBS into spreading Cardinals baseball to a huge region.

Add the fact that they've been a highly successful franchise over the years (second most WS titles to the Yankees), its easy to see how the love of the team would be passed on from generation to generation.

You can tell the popularity of a team by how many of their fans show up at the road games. Yankee, Red Sox, Cardinals, and yes even Cubs fans always have a presence in the other teams ballparks. I don't know if you really see that as much with Braves fans.

And with this statement, I want to make sure EVERYONE in this thread is following another HUGE milestone coming up.

Yes, we have seen Frank Thomas and Sammy Sosa hit another century mark in the realm of home runs, and we have daily updates from a number of media outlets on Barry Bonds pursuit of 755, BUT we should not overlook a crowning achievement that the Phillies are creeping up on:

The FIRST professional sports franchise in ANY league to record 10,000 losses (across the history of the franchise).

WAY TO GO PHILLIES!

Accepting this title on behalf of the Phillies will be Danny Ozark, Jim Fregosi, Terry Francona, Charlie Manuel, Ed Wade, Scott Rolen, Pat Burrell, the Phanatic, and Kevin Milldew ... er, Millwood.
