The Stones 2006 North American Stadium Tour

Well, if no one else is going to post the big news, I guess I will.

The Rolling Stones have announced a new set of dates in North America.

The veteran rockers will return for a massive stateside jaunt in the autumn following a series of successful shows on their A Bigger Bang world tour last August.

Speaking on their official website guitarist Keith Richards wrote: "I thought we left too soon you know, so that's the reason we're coming back. I'm really happy that we got some more gigs in America and Canada."

Confirming his recovery from recent brain surgery, he added: "I'm feeling great and can't wait to get there. We're going to have the b-stage to get that very close thing happening with the band and the fans."

Tickets for the tour, which kicks off in Boston On September 20, officially go on sale on July 31.

The Rolling Stones will play:

Boston Gillette Stadium (September 20)
Halifax Commons (23)
East Rutherford Giants Stadium (27)
Wichita Cessna Stadium (October 2)
Missoula Grizzly Stadium (6)
Regina Mosaic Stadium (8)
Chicago Soldier Field (11)
Seattle Qwest Field (17)
El Paso Sun Bowl (20)
Austin Zilker Park (22)
Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall (27)
Vancouver BC Place Stadium (November 3)
Oakland McAfee Coliseum (5)
Phoenix Cardinals Stadium (8)
Las Vegas MGM Grand (11)
Boise Idaho Centre (14)
Los Angeles Dodger Stadium (18)

I sure hope tickets aren't too expensive, since they're playing in Austin and Zilker is within biking distance of where I live.

I wonder if the ticket site will actually show the price, or just "arm" and "leg"?

I hope the Sept 30 show in Louisville is true. I love Louisville, it's always great for weekend getaway. Catch the show, go to the riverboat.... sounds good to me.

and we all know how Mick and Keith use that gas to lubricate themselves onstage.

To prevent unsightly limb drops.

Darn we might be going to Vegas on the 19th of November. Oh well the tickets are way too pricey. I am surprised that they are playing at the MGM Grand considering the are playing stadiums every where else.

The majority of their shows in North America have actually been in arena's so far. On this new leg of the tour, their playing another small place, relative to a stadium, in Atlantic City. I'm surprised they have not attempted at least one show in either Philadelphia or Washington DC. Philadelphia got two arena shows last year, but DC only got one arena show. Typically, those two cities are places the Stones would play a football stadium, but for some reason, they have chosen not to on this tour.

5th BC Place concert in a row for the Stones here in Vancouver.

It also puts a kibbosh on the rumour that U2 would play the same venue in the last week of October.

It should also put the Mick 'n Keef over U2 for top grossing act of 2005/06.

In GROSS, this may be the case, but in terms of attendance the Vertigo tour will win out.

More importantly, if U2 had elected to tour Europe this summer, it does not appear the Stones would be able to top U2 in GROSS despite their unusually high ticket prices on floor tickets, in contrast to U2's policy of keeping such tickets well below market value in price.

Most Stones shows throughout Europe either struggled to sellout or did not sellout at all despite being on sale for months. This compared to U2 which soldout all of its 32 stadium shows in Europe within minutes or hours of going on sale and the Vertigo Tour Europe is now the highest GROSSING tour ever in European history!

The Stones position in concert drawing strength used to be clearly ahead of what U2's strength was in this area. But U2 has now caught up to the Stones, and is ahead of the Stones in every country with the only exceptions being Japan, Germany, and maybe the United States.

Argentina used to be owned convincingly by the Stones, but the recent visits by both bands within a week of each other revealed that attendance and gross for U2 were well ahead of the Stones.

In any event, at the start of July 2006, this is how the two tours stacked up against each other worldwide:

VERTIGO TOUR
GROSS: $333,206,884
ATTENDANCE: 3,983,650
SHOWS: 118

A BIGGER BANG TOUR
GROSS: $256,038,439
ATTENDANCE: 1,995,071
SHOWS: 72
