Wow, it sure took me long enough to discover this thread. Better late than never.

Irvine, great commentary.

So, what do you think the deal with the monks is? Are they in real life and the alternate dimension?

i'm really not sure about the monks -- though perhaps it was showing Tony stripped of his powers (via losing his name and becoming Kevin Finnerty) to such an extent that even people noted for nonviolence are able to slap him around?

it doesn't seem to fit that it would be explicitly religious, since no other religions (other than Catholicism, with purgatory and the commercial talking about sin and salvation) are represented.

but they did seem to know his name and that he had screwed them over with the heating -- i suppose symbols of Karma is as good a guess as any.

Maybe its some kind of connection to Gloria Trillo? She was a Buddhist and he seemd to be intrigued by it. There was a quote Gloria said to Tony, something about the suffering of others, and when Tony repeated it to Melfi, she told him it had an Eastern flair.

Tony was was also reading Sun Tzu's The Art of War at some point but I'm not sure if that would correlate with Eastern religion or the monks so I'm probably talking out of my ass with that one

Thanks, guys. All those theories sound plausible. I feel fairly certain that the storyline will come back to it even if Tony never goes back into a coma.

Also, I was just watching the most recent episode for the second time and I could swear that one of the nurses, the one that was checking Tony's eyes for vital signs, was the same guy who played the monk that slapped him. I might be wrong though.

I was also thinking about the choice of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for the song at the end of the episode. Maybe it's kind of like The Wizard of Oz in that the characters from his dreams are real people in the real world too. Know what I mean?

I'm really impressed with this season so far. I never thought I would see the day I'd appreciate the buildup over violence.
