Article on soccer/the World Cup in Spiegel

Quote:
Explanations abound as to why this game stokes such passion around the globe. It's the people's game with something for everybody. Short people can look up to a Roberto Carlos; tall people to a Michael Ballack, and fat people to a Ronaldo.
Ouch.

Great win for the Ecuadorians, and a pretty entertaining opening match (apart from the crappy 10 minute period where nothing happened at the start of the second half).

i am so sick of hearing about ronaldo's weight. he's obviously not fat, it would be impossible for him to perform the way he does if he really was.

hey tomasz,

believe it or not i was in your city about a year ago, at the university. i have a friend there...

i used to live in lomza/zambrow near bialystok... ever been there?

nice to see polish people around... and tough loss today. you guys definitely lacked an edge.

Have you seen recent pictures of him? He's clearly packing on at least 10-15 lbs of excess baggage. This might very well not affect his play in the World Cup, but it's quite visible.

So I'm new to following the World Cup, but I hope you all don't mind if I join you in this thread. This time around I figured I'd watch some of the matches and see how it goes. Watched Poland and Ecuador today (and was sad that Poland lost--my grandmother was Polish). Fun to watch, though! I'll be keeping track and trying to learn the game a little better.

The Polish defense is so bad. Really bad. And I wanted them to win that game too.

It's a simple game to understand, you just need to know that Brazilians or Germans always win it.

Italians have won it more than Germans I believe, and Argentinians just as often as Germans.
