The Official (!) Asian Cup Thread

Normally I wouldn't give two hoots about this cup, or soccer at all, but I wanna see how Australia goes. There's really only three of four half decent sides in the whole comp.

Whoever thought co-hosting among four countries was a brilliant idea is an idiot.

Brilliant thread for one of the most appealing tournaments in world sport.

Thailand's draw against Iraq last night was not only an historic result for Thai football, but also good for the Aussies, playing in their first-ever Asian Cup.

Oman will be tough. A good tight-knit team who impressed in qualifying. Legendary Argentine Calderon is the gaffer for the Omanese, so they could perhaps spring a surprise.

My tip, Australia 3, Oman 2. Oz's defence is rebuilding after the retirement of Poppa and the absence of Moore, so we might certainly concede. Oman are also better climatised to the conditions. In Australia's favour, we have too many stars and the invaluable experience that was our presence at 2006's World Cup.

In Group B, Japan seem a little under-prepared, while Qatar and the UAE are certainly no mugs when it comes to football.

In Group C, Iran should progress, while an inconsistent China and an underated Uzbekistan will battle for the other QF spot.

Group D features the cream of the hosts, Indonesia, and despite being drawn into a group of deat, the home crowd could see them exceed even their own expectations. Korea Rep, Saudi and Bahrain are all class footballing nations though, with Saudi Arabia my tip to win their 4th Asian Cup.

It seems the same idiotic idea is being used at the next Cricket World Cup too.

Shame on the media for underestimating the brilliance of some of these Arab nations. They are bogey sides for us. Iran '97, Kuwait '06 and Oman and Iraq in this tournament.

It's been a ripper of a tournament so far. We currently lead Thailand by one goal to nil, so Australia could progress.

The intensity of the competition is fabulous. Who'd have though that Vietnam would qualify for the Quarter Finals, and what about 2002 World Cup Semi-Finalists South Korea, who are on the brink of elimination.

This tournament exemplifies why football is the beautiful game. A real slap in the face to that has-been sport, cricket, with it's limiting, petty, farcical international tournaments and it's failure to really capture the imagination of people the world over.

WOOOOOOOOOO!!! about time we won - 4 - 0. Although the score line was flattering to us. Thailand played brilliant their passing game was great and we were very VERY lucky to get away with it. Arnold is shit and i hate him like fireworks. Lets just hope we start playing as a team now.

This tournament proves that Australia still has a long way to go to be a true force in Asia. If we hadn't won against Thailand....

And bring back Guus!!!!

Japan-Australia quarter final - Mouth watering with a capital M.

Vietnam have been a dream, who'd have thought they'd qualify for the Quarters....

That story about Iraq is a discrace. It just really makes you feel shit about humanity if people in a country where there is very little to be happy about suddenly has something to cheer and they get bombed.
