Give'r!

Welcome weary travelers!

We've been kicked around the corner, we've been known by different names but it's time to reopen the Octagon Bar!

...Stop in for a coffee or tea in the morning, bring your newspaper and sit in our soft leather couches. For lunch, come in and have a cocktail. Your boss will never know. When work is over, stop in for Happy Hour; you can be assured that your presence will not go unnoticed. Late nights are the best and the most wicked; the patrons are a frisky lot, but always friendly.

The Octagon Bar is located on the first floor of the Clarence Hotel in Dublin, Ireland. U2 are part owners of this magnificent watering hole and we seek to reproduce the camaraderie of a pub, complete with bar fights, dancing girls, and moderators who shut us down when the noise or the post count gets too high.

May I suggest that you order a drink, ask one of the lovelies or one of the gents for a , or perhaps you want to play a song on the jukebox. Share pictures of your kids and yourselves. Don’t be shy--by morning we’ll forget your face anyway.

This is a patron-run bar, so if the bartender is asleep in the back, or cuddled up on the couch with one of the patrons, go and pour a drink for your mate. The drink selection is only limited by your imagination. So dream out loud!

I'm not trying to start a row here, :banghead: but can anyone tell me the origins of the phrase (word) Give'r?

In my lexicon it means nothing, I don't know why it's clever or funny or what sort of instructions it's meant to convey. Like the Brain Eating in It's Official, this one appears to be an inside joke that you had to be there for in order to truly appreciate it.

** Grabs a coke from the fridge and begins nursing it for the double whammy of sugar and caffeine **

Pardon my question, but I'm bored on a Tuesday afternoon

Dave did explain this at one point...something to do with Nova Scotian slang. I'm sure he could run it by us again later.

*walks in smelling of coffee and brownies*
I had to do some very important tasting at work today
apparently the espresso brownies taste wonderful with the valencia coffee :D
*sits down and patiently waits for Tim to get home from work*

I see there was some major tiffs going on in the last bar :(
that sucks.....

I'm done with all that. I'm not even going to bother anymore. He's not worth my time and effort at this point.

Give'r is Nova Scotia (east coast in general) slang for "go for it". It literally means "Give her", which is a way of saying "Give it your best shot". That morphed into "Go for it" over the years. It's an encouragement and a signal all at once.

Time for a swim in the hot tub.

:: tosses off pool robe, slides in hot tub with a sangria in one hand and a book in the other ::

So is the forum going to be crap for the next few days like today? I just want to be warned before I bother coming on here. :|

Hard to say. I know Elvis was working on the problem...

I guess the server can be kind of unpredictable when traffic is heavy.

*comes in with a pot of gold and some GA tix for madison square garden*
*puts them on the bar counter and places a sign over them*
"free to the first ten customers"

Think that might attract customers?

*grabs a glass of merlot and plays with the beer taps*
