Right, I know 'Eton Rifles', 'That's Entertainment', 'English Rose' and 'A Bomb In Wardour Street'. What are other good Jam songs, and should I buy a best of and get done with it, or am I better off with an album? Which best of/album should I buy first? Are the BBC Sessions any good? How about Style Council? Weller solo?

Precious, Beat Surrender, A Town Called Malice are all good. I happen to like their later pseudo-Motown attempts. Not everyone does. I'd get a greatest hits record to start and then see how you like it. I never cared much for Style Council or Paul's solo stuff. He's far too serious and self-absorbed for me all by himself; he barely escapes that in many Jam tunes.

They did cook live, though!

I prefer Weller solo. He may be the greatest artist living on the planet right now. I saw him live in Boston last week and he was amazing, working his ass off. He kinda has a rootsy, soul, R&B vibe through much of his solo work, but he also still loves his Epiphone Casino, and his band is the tightest on the planet. His best solo records are Wildwood and Heliocentric. After those try Stanley Road and Heavy Soul. He does have a Best Of for his solo work, it's called Modern Classics and it's a good place to start.

the jam

but i plan to steal all the reccommendations for good stuff to check out from this thread cos i don't actually own any of their stuff

I used to think that the song, "Kick Out the Jams" was by The Jam. It's not, it's by MC5.

Rage covered that song too. I really doubt Rage has covered any songs by The Jam.

rage did a good job covering the mc5, but yeah i don't think they've covered the jam before...
